One of the few books about SharePoint Foundation 2010 17 July 2011
By Robert D. Crane - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you don't know, there are two distinct version of SharePoint, Server and Foundation. SharePoint Foundation 2010 is available as a free download from Microsoft and is the base of the enterprise version known as SharePoint Server 2010. Thus, if you want to learn SharePoint, no matter what the version, you are going to need to learn about the features found in SharePoint Foundation 2010.

Too many SharePoint books I have read simply gloss over SharePoint Foundation 2010 and concentrate solely on SharePoint Server 2010. It is very refreshing to find a book totally dedicated to the base version of SharePoint that is available to anyone for free. Because SharePoint Foundation 2010 provides the building blocks for SharePoint Server 2010 I believe that everyone looking for information about the capabilities of SharePoint would greatly benefit from investing their time in reading this book.

The author has provided a very comprehensive guide for the SharePoint product, in many cases I believe the information provided in this book is far more comprehensive and relevant than other SharePoint books I have read. It takes through the whole process, from installing a single server, customizing, all the way through to configuring multi-server 'farm' environments. The book focuses more on the technical aspects of managing and maintaining SharePoint rather than designing solution or modifying the branding. However, there is very scant information about this available elsewhere and this book does a fantastic job of pulling it together in one place as a reference for the SharePoint administrator.

If you are looking to learn more about SharePoint or do indeed have the SharePoint Foundation 2010 product this book is probably the best for 'cutting your teeth' and getting up to speed with administrating the product. It provides a single source of information that is generally very hard to locate elsewhere. Best of all, it won't confuse you when it comes to which version of SharePoint it is talking about as it squarely focused on SharePoint Foundation 2010, which remember is freely available but rarely mentioned (unfortunately).

One of the best SharePoint books 5 Jun 2011
By Cincy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ok, I'm impressed! I own and I have reviewed a lot of SharePoint books over the years. This one is one of the most complete and useful I have found. Usually after I have read or reviewed a book I eventually give it away in one of my classes or at the local user groups. I'm keeping this one! (I got this copy directly from the author, but would buy it anyway. Actually I will be buying a number of copies for use in my SharePoint classes.)

Who is the book for? A quick look at the TOC would make you think that it is just for administrators as it has chapters on install, configuration and backup, and it really is a book for administrators. But, it's also one of the best books I seen for Site Owners and Power Users! Of the 16 chapters, a good 7 1/2 are ideal for non-administrators, and those chapters as well worth the price of the book. (currently $34.63 at Amazon)

Even if you are an experienced SharePoint administrator, you will find a lot of useful real-world content. You may even get your money's worth from just reading the hundreds of little gray "sidebars" spread though out the book. (I did.)

This book is huge! It's just under 1300 pages. There's a Kindle version available if you don't want haul the big book around. (I still like to dog ear, highlight and write in paper books myself.)

If you want to preview it, chapter 1, the TOC and the index is available as PDFs at the publisher's site: [...]
Best Sharepoint Foundation Book Ever 8 May 2012
By BostonBob - Published on Amazon.com

This book is a great read for anyone, beginner or advanced. We will be migrating our environment from WSS3 to SPF2010 this summer and I needed material that would help guide me through an installation and migration from WSS3 to SPF2010. After reading this author's WSS3 book, the book taught a beginner like myself how to install, configure, backup, manage and maintain a WSS3 environment, so I knew when she came out with an SPF2010 book that I would get a copy. After reading through some of the chapters (the book is huge with every possible topic covered)I can tell you the author does not disappoint. If you plan on installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 in your environment, this book is for you. There is a lot of Sharepoint books out there, but you could not find another author that devotes his/her time to the free version of Sharepoint. I think this author is the only one. I would recommend this book to anyone. This author is a devoted teacher and mentor as well and is very open to communication with her readers.
