3.0 out of 5 stars More of a "Overview" and "Feature Crawl" than guide! 24 Dec. 2014
By Johnny - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is OK for what it is. The "Mastering" series runs hot and cold as far as quality goes. Just understand a couple of things:

In spite of the title that claims "Mastering" you will not get enough step-by-step instructions to master anything. A more appropriate title should be "Feature overview and concepts of Virtualization associated with Hyper-V and System Center". But that would not sell as many books.

Where there are indications that install, management, or configuration "steps" are available, often, there is a link to some msdn blog site with the "real" instructions.

If you want a overview, fine, this is the book. One of the few that even cover this topic.
If you want to set up your own Hyper-V SCVMM lab, look elsewhere. Some online guides are OK. They are not perfect though.

What people want is a good, step-by-step guide in how to set this stuff up. And it should be easy enough to do but I have found no existing text that wants to attempt it well. A couple of "Cookbook" titles claim to do so but poor writing and editing make these other texts marginally worth purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have seen the light! 17 April 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
John does a fantastic job explaining the details of running a private cloud on Hyper-V and System Center. My organization has been a long time VMWare shop, but this book has me excited about converting (at least some of) our hosts to Hyper-V and I feel more confident in my skills to manage that private cloud after reading this book. John does a good job of explaining even 400-level content in a way that is easy to comprehend and start delivering against. Great technical reading...5+ Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource 20 Jun. 2014
By BigAl43 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm looking at a potential conversion of my VMware environment to Hyper-V. This book explained all the ins and outs so I was able to make a pretty accurate comparison of the two. I used a lot of the information in the book to build a scaled down model of my existing infrastructure using VMM and Hyper-V.

The explanation of Hyper-V's networking was particularly useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book available on Microsoft's Cloud Solutions 14 April 2014
By Donald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
John Savill is hands down the leading expert on Microsoft's Private (Windows Server and System Center) and Public Cloud (Microsoft Azure) solutions today. Rather than dumb down the material John builds up the reader's technical knowledge to the point she/he can fully understand even the deepest concepts with Hyper-V or Azure. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the leading Cloud platform.
