As close to a divine text as you can get (Matthew Fort Guardian )

Product Description

'This isn't just any cookery book. This is Mastering the Art of French Cooking and it's a book that is a statement, not of culinary intent, but of aspiration, a commitment to a certain sort of good life, a certain sort of world-view; a votive object implying taste and appetite and a little je ne sais quoi. Julia Child's books are a triumph, and also a trophy.' A A GILL, The Times

This is the bestselling classic guide to French cooking with over 1000 clear authentic and delicious recipes for every key French dish from Boeuf Bourguignon to the perfect croissant.

And now to celebrate its 50th anniversary Penguin have reset and redesigned the text and there is a special anniversary introduction from Julia Child. Published in time for Mother's Day, this boxset with its two beautiful hardback volumes will become the essential ingredient for any cultivated kitchen

Just received these hardback versions of the two volumes of Mastering the Art... Only just published (March 2011) in a nice slip case so I bought them as a present for myself and my partner so we could try out what, by are all accounts, are excellent recipes explained in well-written style. I certainly endorse the point about the writing - it is a model of how clear recipe writing can be, but often isn't. Not tried any of the recipes yet because the books only just arrived BUT the reason I'm writing this review so soon after delivery is that I wanted to warn other possible purchasers of a 'devil in the detail'. Whether the version Amazon UK is selling is really meant for the US market I don't know (?), but I was disappointed to discover when I opened my parcel that the sticker on the front of the pack proudly announces ' NOW CONVERTED TO IMPERIAL MEASURMENTS' Great! So all we UK and European cooks now have to convert temperatures and weights back into metric. It's a relatively small issue and not one to return the books for, but it is irritating when these books are intended for a UK and possibly European market. This may not matter to you as a factor when compared with the undoubted merits of the books otherwise, but it seemed worthwhile to mention it. It also means 4 stars not 5

I bought this book as a gift to my girlfriend after watching that movie...
I wasn't sure what to expect but I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by the content and quality of the book. The text is printed on non-white kind of "old-style" good quality paper.

The recipes are great, and being French myself I discovered many recipes I have never even remotely heard of and a nomber of very useful advices to use while cooking.
As a previous reviewer said, the measurements are the royal UK thingy, and it might be tricky for us metric users, but I've learned before that it is always useful to keep a conversion chart of some kind in your kitchen, so it is not such a big deal. You could also just convert everything online before starting, it won't take much time, unless you plan to cook every single recipe in both books in a record time.

Excellent book 23 July 2011
Format:Hardcover
An informative and well researched book which is a must have for any cooking / food enthusiast . What is wonderful is that recipes have been reviewed and revised keeping in mind the current times and appliances / products available .
Recipes are relatively simple and ingredients easily available in most cases .
I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy this treasure trove of recipes and information written in a simple direct style .
Buy the books , you will be happy to have done so !
