5.0 out of 5 stars Great if you're new to digital SLRs, 21 Aug 2007
I bought a Nikon D80 a couple of weeks back, after having owned a 'bridge' digi camera. I'd trawled endlessly through web and mag reviews before going for the D80 and knew the basics about SLRs but really needed a book to help me take decent pix that are occasionally published by magazines that commission me. So I guess you could say I'm an enthusiast rather than an all-out professional. But I needed a book to help me improve.

I ended up buying this paperback for £26 - again, after looking at loads of similar titles in Borders. And I have to say it's absolutely top notch. It focuses on using and getting results from the camera, rather than post processing. After all, who wants to spend hours sitting at a computer correcting an image you could have got right out in the field? Yes, the author is American but it's very well written and easily to follow - he's got a good style and doesn't waste time talking about the basics. Then again it's not rocket science, either, so you won't end up confused to hell. There's also a good index and an excellent glossary. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute godsend!, 1 Feb 2008

If you own a digital SLR camera and are still confused as to how to get the best out of it, or if you are seriously thinking about buying one, this book is a must have. It really is an absolute godsend. An answer to an enthusiast's prayers.

Busch, a professional photographer, explains clearly and concisely the electronic, and mechanical, nuts and bolts of a dSLR without bogging you down in camera technobabble. He covers everything you need to know to get the best out of such a gadget. He concentrates on what you need to know to tweek your camera before you take a picture, leaving computer tweeking for other instruction books. He does not, however, totally ignore relevant computer technology. Without going into great detail, he provides an excellent overview of a number of the software applications on the market which might salvage your odd disaster! On top of demystifying the camera, he also covers the use of appropriate lenses, flash, and good techniques and tips to get the most out of a wide ranging variety of photo opportunities which may interest the reader. The book is well illustrated with relevant diagrams and great photos to assist in understanding the text. Nice, but superfluous, pictures you can get in other works. In addition it is very well referenced and it has an excellent glossary, also illustrated where necessary, to provide a broader understanding of the contents and also the wider photographic scene.

On top of everything else, it is bang up to date, just published in January of this year.

Most of my other photography books are now heading for the charity shop!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant and brilliantly simple., 13 Jan 2009
By Dr. Sally Tonge "Sally" (Northumberland, UK) - See all my reviews

I used to be a university lecturer, so I have read a lot of textbooks, but I have never before sat down and read a whole one in a single session because I wanted to: the information is exactly what somebody who wants to know how and why things work needs and it is beautifully presented in a clear and simple style. There is a lot in this book that I have not found in other books with the same or similar titles: it is, as the author wants it to be, about "photography" and covers each topic in enough detail to make the reader confident that s/he has not only learned important principles but should be able to apply them. I hope David Busch teaches young students as well as adults - anyone who can make facts as interesting as he does would surely be an inspirational teacher for those thinking about a scientific career.
