This is one of the best tutorial books ever not only does Arlene give you great step by step instructions she also tells you why you do it this way. For novices there is a great section on color theory and also perspective. To complete all the projects you are even given the outlined drawings to trace instead of doing it all freehand. A great book for novices and intermediate users although I am sure some pro's would pick up some good tips too.

Arlene is a great artist, this is beyond doubt to anyone who has seen her work. Those of us who know her from "Scribbletalk", where she gives tirelessly of her wealth of knowledge and experience, know she is also a great teacher. Put those two qualities together and you are bound to have a great book. What I really like about this book is not just the information on how to work with coloured pencil, but the focus on being an artist. Arlene concentrates on composition, on seeing, on developing a vision in your head - and then gives you the tools you need to make that vision come to life. I have worked in coloured pencil for many years now, and still learnt a lot from this book, and I am sure it will soon be seen as a classic.

This is a very good book for learning to use coloured pencils and improving your technique. I have seen others use the same layering and burnishing techniques, so their is nothing unique in that, but the paintings are vibrant and beautiful. The 15 demonstrations are worth following, there is a lot of useful information here. Good variety of subjects painted too.
