I personally never liked the term 'jazz funk' and that is probably the problem with this compilation. The term does neither musical genre justice and when you are faced with the diversity of music that comes under the jazz banner this only compounds the problem.I prefer the term modern jazz which allows the flexibility of incorporating other musical styles within the term without putting the music in a rigid box.
Mastercuts have assembled these three discs by way of a sampler of the series of 'jazz funk' collections they have released.A quick glance at the content and certain names will be well known to fans of this type of music who probably own most of the club classics like Birdland,Expansions, Brazilian Love Affair,Sun Goddess, Hop Scotch, Could Heaven Ever Be Like This.I personally purchased this set for the fantastic jazz dancer El Bobo which I did not have in my collection. To be fair the music by the more established (older) artists tends to stand out better than some of the more modern obscure tracks but for the price, the tracks cited in this review should make it worthwhile if you want to add some jazzy grooves to your collection quickly and relatively cheaply. There are some obvious tracks missing if the album where called 'The greatest Jazz Funk Album In The World' but it isn't; so enjoy some of the gems tucked away in about three hours of music. One star was way too harsh and as for the review stating 'weird, obscure, boring or depressing'I think obscure is the only relevant title. This is where a lack of appreciating the jazzier side of the set is demonstrated-'jazz funk!'I rest my case.

I must admit, I was expecting a bit more of the old-style jazz funk to go with the sampled noises that filled out the second halves of the 3-CD set.
Weather Report's 'Birdland', Stanley Clarke's 'Silly Putty' is NOT jazz funk, neither is Idris Muhammed's 'Could Heaven Ever Be Like This', firmly based in disco (although I do like it).
I should have read the list more closely.

These sre great CDs, as they contain various Jazz funk music from so many various artists. The collections are all very high calibre, and most of all Master Cut CDs mean they sound fantastic. So much details and highest sound qualiy CDs. Highly recommended.

I enjoy jazz funk so I thought this would be a steal at this price but the tracks were not that good. Some were weird, obscure, boring or depressing. Not up to Mastercuts standards in my opinion.
