I first heard of Jem Mace nearly 50 years ago while training as schoolboy boxer in a run down old gym in Liverpool. My introduction to Mace was from hearing the question, "Who is the former heaveyweight champion of the world buried in Anfield cemetery, here in Liverpool." From that moment my curiosity about Mace as followed me down the years both through research into Mace and my involvment with the Merseyside Former Boxers Association's efforts to have a headstone erected on the site of his grave.
Until this book Mace's life as been one of mystery with no one able to link together his private life with his boxing life. Graham Gordon as done this and laid the mystery's and myths to rest.
Gordon as given us a detailed account of Maces private life and his boxing career to present a compeling story of the life and times of the Father of Modern Boxing. As an avid reader of boxing for 50 years, this is one of the best boxing books of the bare-knuckle era I have ever read. Terry Kavanagh, Liverpool, UK.
