Product Description

For the first time the complete early recordings by this greatest icon of Rembetika are collected complete and chronological. Markos Vamvakaris was one of the founding fathers of Rembetika. His music is deep, emotional and completely accessible for the modern 'roots' audience. These fabulously rare recordings are transferred directly from 78's and are superbly remastered and the set has full sleevenotes and information.

If you like Rebetiko, and you know Markos Vamvakaris was the greatest, this is for you. Everything he did from 1932 to 1937, in the best possible recording quality. If you think 78s are always noisy, scratchy things, think again. This is remastering done properly. I love it.

Markos Vamvakaris (Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης) 14 Nov 2012

Markos Vamvakaris is the most important person (singer-songwriter)in Greek music. His music and his ideas are all behind the music people play in Greece today. Vamvakaris's musical style is called REMBETIKA, blueslike music from underworld and from poor people. Remastered songs are easy to listen and the collection contains the best part of Markos's songs. Notice: no tourist music. MY FULL RECOMENDATION.

The King 12 Jan 2011
By Andrew Levas - Published on Amazon.com
If there is a pantheon of rembetika musicians, Vamvakaris would sit on the throne. Every note is played to perfection, every vocal conveys the weight of the world. All others stand in his shadow. Essential listening.
