Product Description

Product Description
The Vangmoor was a dark, forbidding place. One victim had been found there with her face disfigured and her hair shorn close to the scalp. Then a second woman disappeared on the moor, and a sense of dread gripped the 50 local men who searched for her. Someone was watching; was it the killer?

3.0 out of 5 stars One of her best books, 22 Nov 2006

This was the first Ruth Rendell book I read after hearing some of it on Woman's Hour and, trying to know the ending, asked the library for Ruth Lendl. Fortunately, the librarian knew what I wanted and put me on the road to be an avid fan (also of Barbara Vine). I imagine it being set in Yorkshire although it doesn't say. It's also the first time I encountered an unnatural mother who Ruth Rendell seems to specialise in. Bit too much reliance on coincidences to ring true, but a good read nevertheless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Creepy!, 3 Mar 2007

Wasn't sure whether to go for 3 or 4 stars, so I'll settle for 3 and 1/2. It's an interesting thriller with a clever creepiness about it. An intriguing tale of a chap who adores the moors by his house. He knows their every nook and cranny and therefore is the immediate suspect when he discovers the body of a young woman there.

Like a previous reviewer I felt this was set in Yorkshire with maybe the Old Town somewhere like Otley. A short book but that's in it's favour and I really liked the build up to the twist but maybe the horror-craver in me would have liked the story to end before the last paragraph as that would have made it more chilling for me.
