This is another best seller from Sidney Sheldon turned into a great mini-series. The story spans three continents and four generations of MacGregor /Blackwell family. The story begins at the 90th birthday of Kate Blackwell the main character, daughter of James Macgregor and in a flashback we are taken to the very beginning when her father James McGregor left Scotland for South Africa in search of diamond wealth. How he was cheated, robbed and beaten up and left for dead by an influential Dutch man who made his own fortune by robbing and cheating new prospectors; to how he was saved by the very same Bantu slave, Banda hired to kill him, the friendship that developed between them, how with grit and determination they entered the forbidden diamond beach and emerged loaded with a fortune in uncut diamonds. From there we see how James MacGregor sought revenge on the Dutch man and gradually took ownership of the diamond mine and built up a fortune and a dynasty. We also see his ruthlessness in using the daughter of the Dutch man Margaret for his revenge on the Dutch man, a cycle of vengeance that eventually leads to his untimely demise following the death of his son. If he was a go-getter who pursued his desires and his quest for success by using his overwhelming wealth and influence no matter who got hurt, his daughter was a master manipulator in the game of getting ahead and getting what you want.

I never could understand why it was titled Master of the Game, but having revisited the series it became clear to me. Kate Macgregor Blackwell was a master manipulator, without consideration for other people's freewill nor did she subscribe to the notion `Que sera sera', she schemed for everything. When she wanted Mr.

This 1984 TV series adaptation of Sidney Sheldon's novel should not be missed if you enjoy an excellent story, good acting and
superb cinematography.
I got this Tv series from the local library who have donated VHS Tapes they can no longer use and as i still have a VHS player, thought i would try this out for a couple of evenings viewing as ordinary TV is so bad. I was most pleasantly suprised.
The story has been well documented by an Amazon reviewer in 2010 and can still be seen, so will not go into it save to say that it is
a rollicking good yarn, stretches the imagination at times, but this is a minor distraction to a fascinating story about 4 generations of the MacGregor/Blackwell family set in South Africa, New York and Paris. The acting is first class by all participants, watch out for the marvellous cameo by Donald Pleasance as an Afrikaaner called Van de Merwe, it was so well done.
The cinematography is quite outstanding and i did not find the series dated whatsoever, in fact it was far better made than many of the series made today. A lot of thought went into the production as well as expense i would imagine and it was very well worth it.
The first part of the story about the Macgegor family was the best from delving into the characters in depth and the superb cinematography, but the second part about the Blackwell's will appeal to the avid followers of the soapy intrigue variety.
All in all i thoroughly recommend this TV series, some modern ones could learn a lot from it, it was thoroughly entertaining.

This was an old TV series out in the eighties and well worth watching again.
Some people have probably never heard of it and some people probably
Forgot about it but it is nice to watch it in its entirety instead of having to
Wait every week for the next instalment.
