More About the Author

Mike Edwards has been in the building Industry since he left School at 15. He attended Bircham Newton Civil Engineering college where he studied as a quantity surveyor before starting a Building Company in 1976.

The Company ran for 24 years in London, Bracknell Berkshire and finally Somerset where Mike now lives.

In 1990 Mike realised the DIY market was growing quickly and as a hobby started a small website (DIY Doctor) helping home-owners with DIY problems. A great way to market the Building Company!

The website took off very quickly and Mike changed direction looking for a way to earn a living from www.diydoctor.org.uk. The DIY Projects section was born and advertisers soon flooded to the pages. Today the website has 13,000 pages and receives over 100,000 users every week.

Mike is quick to point out that DIY is not easy. It is simply building work done by amateurs and safety, research and preparation are the keys to a good job. His book, Master Basic DIY sets out to show enthusiasts how to complete satisfying projects while staying safe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent aid for the DIY amateur 18 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A genuinely valuable document. It is full of information on subjects both large and small and gives advice, not only on how work should be done, but also why and why not it should be carried out in particular ways. I especially like the Insights and Tips stressing brief points, often on safety or expert tricks of the trade. One of the few books on DIY that is well worth reading as well as keeping for reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful guide 7 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this for my son and his fiancee as they have just bought a house and want to "do things" to it. If he's anything like his dad they will still have a plank lying up the stairs since 1979 waiting to be used for a job in the dining room that is still not done in 2012.

3.0 out of 5 stars BASIC is the word 19 Nov 2013
By Legin
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have done a fair bit of basic DIY work and was therefore looking for a book which would be a reference point for future work projects. However, I found this very basic for my needs. This may be a good starter book for someone with absolutely no DIY knowledge, but if you have basic existing skills, I would suggest to get something a bit more detailed.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best 23 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
Bought as a gift and a bit of a joke for my daughter's young non-practical boyfriend, but I have to say, on first viewing, it is not very good for a pure beginner. Info is really better for someone who has some confidence in doing bigger jobs than the basic maintenance and repairs.
