This is not a full review of the music on this disk, but more a caveat to other listeners who may be put off by the vocalizing on this recording. Apparently Jimmy Smith was one of those players who tunelessly grunts along with his playing. Whoever recorded/mastered/produced this product seemed to want to loudly preserve that aspect of the experience for the listener. Why? If you were at a jazz club and someone brought in their pet pig who proceeded to grunt through every piece, you'd ask them to leave, right?
I don't know, maybe some people find the grunting charming. Frankly, I think it almost ruins the disk. The playing here is spectacular, so this feature is truly disappointing. Thankfully it is at least possible to listen to Kenny Burrell's parts without the noises.
