Massimo is one of the rare designer that speak sense! In the movie Helvetica was the only one among designers that speak clear ideas without freaking out of some trendy talk that are full of words and no meaning (the others were talking and talking and said no usefull thing in the movies + -). His philosophy are clear and convincing. I love this book, almost a small pocket size, eay to read but with a lot of concepts to think about.

The power of design 23 Dec 2011
By Robin Benson TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Images of Australia published this book in 2004 and in 2007 'Vignelli: from A to Z'. Lars Muller published 'The Vignelli Canon' in 2011. There is a similarity between these three books: approximately the same size and a lot of duplication with the images.

'Design is One' is no more than a photo and caption sampling of Lella and Massimo's work from 1955 to 2003. The 'A to Z' as the title suggests uses each letter to tie in with some of their work. 'The Vignelli Canon' I thought was the best of the three. The contents are divided into two sections: The Intangibles looks at the intellectual basis of design and The Tangibles provides some basic practical observations.

For much more comprehensive look at the Vignelli's work check out Rizzoli's 1990 published 276 pages overview: 'Design: Vignelli'.

One to one 29 Jan 2005

What is nice about books such as 'Design is One' is the quality of narrating your experience in first person. Massimo talks to you as you read, making it a very personal tour through the rich Vignelli life of design. To notice the excitements and dissappointments, thus, makes it more of a true story than a glorified publishing product. I didnt enjoy a designer's work more through a book since I read a similar narrative book on Frank Gehry.

An excellent publication, demonstrating a range of outstanding design. For students, read the words don't just look at the illustrations!
