Fans only 17 July 2010
By Frank
Format:Paperback
Unlike the books that themselves are somewhat lacking when stacked up against the original source material, this graphic novel however shows a bit more love to the games. Without spoiling the plot, in short the character in focus is Liara that fans of the series will instantly recognize. Redemption is both a sequel and prequel, taking place in between the first a second games but it doesn't bridge the gap. Instead it's more of a "meanwhile" story featuring new characters and settings although there are some tie-ins to the main plot of Mass Effect 2.

Pros:
- Stand alone story.
- A detailed expansion to the Mass Effect canon.
- Good pacing.
- While it won't blow you away, the artwork is decent enough being clear and colourful.
- Improved over the novels.

Cons:
- For die hard fans only as they will be the only ones to understand the back story.
- Not as gripping as the games themselves.
- Some lacking characterization, even differing (Lirara is much more aggressive than I remember her).

Naturally it would better to play the games themselves first, as Redemption is hardly vital to understanding them yet since the series has always done a good job making the player care about the characters, Redemption gives them a little more about them. It's hardly the best sci-fi graphic novel, being a step below most others but it's also a step above most tie-ins. As it stands as a graphic novel, it's probably more of a 3 but fans should appreciate it more.

Again, only for fans.

On a side note, there are 3 others that focus on other characters and tie-in to eachother but have yet to be released in the UK.

Writing a story set in an established game universe, especially if it's set in a BioWare created universe. The main difficulty as I see it is the writer cannot assume too much about what has occurred before the story you are about the read. In other words, this story has to follow from Shepard's story in Mass Effect (the game); and since everyone may play the game differently by making different decisions...well, you can imagine for yourself the difficulty in this. As such, your involvement with the story in Redemption then depends on how (your) Shepard(s)'s story ended in Mass Effect. The writer is constrained by having to write in such a way as to not make certain decision in Mass Effect canon to generate that this is still (your) Shepard's story.

Redemption is setting the stage for Mass Effect 2. If you played Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 then this will enhance the overall experience, though some may wonder how this connects to their Shepard given they did X or Y in Mass Effect. Some points of Redemption certainly does seem to conflict with your Shepard's story, though not the overall plot.

As a comic book (collected into a trade paperback) how does it fair? Well...being a medium that relies on the visual aspect as much as the strength of writing I found the artwork adequate. (The covers are very nice but the interior art does not match that quality.) Certainly the art isn't the sort I would buy a title for; nor is the writer someone whose work I would buy because they wrote it. I bought this as a fan of the Mass Effect series.

In and of itself Redemption is an interesting enough read but after the release of Lair of the Shadow Broker, itself a device to prepare for Mass Effect 3, a lot of the apparent strangeness of Liara's character in Mass Effect 2 is resolved even if you don't read this. As a fan I might be tempted to award 4/5, but as a standalone product it is average at best.

I'm a big fan of the Mass Effect Universe and it's characters so I want to give an honest review on this graphic novel from the perspective of someone who has been deeply immersed in the ME Universe.

Narrative:

Liara is one of my favourite characters in Mass Effect and so I was excited to see what events shaped her to become the character she is in ME2 during the time between 1 & 2. Firstly, I feel that the story was quite shallow. To sum it up, the whole story is pretty much Liara's relentless pursuit of the remains of Commander Shepard (with the help of an ally). I was surprised to find that there was not much more to it. Familiar faces are introduced to the narrative but they're not expanded on; I personally wanted to know a little more about these characters but then again Liara is the focus of the story.

Whilst the story does strongly show Liara's commitment to her friend Shepard by the way that she'll do anything and go through anyone to save him/her, an overly aggressive side of her personality is frequently highlighted that does not seem in character at all.

Artwork:

I personally felt that the artwork wasn't as quality as it could have been; mainly because of inconsistency in characters' appearances, however it's easy to forget that the turn around for a comic series is quite quick (As far as I know, this graphic novel was a four part comic series before being compiled into one volume). In terms of composition, I think the pages are well laid out and the story is easy to read. I do love the front cover however!

I wouldn't say it's a necessary read for Mass Effect fans
