Unlike the books that themselves are somewhat lacking when stacked up against the original source material, this graphic novel however shows a bit more love to the games. Without spoiling the plot, in short the character in focus is Liara that fans of the series will instantly recognize. Redemption is both a sequel and prequel, taking place in between the first a second games but it doesn't bridge the gap. Instead it's more of a "meanwhile" story featuring new characters and settings although there are some tie-ins to the main plot of Mass Effect 2.
Pros:
- Stand alone story.
- A detailed expansion to the Mass Effect canon.
- Good pacing.
- While it won't blow you away, the artwork is decent enough being clear and colourful.
- Improved over the novels.
Cons:
- For die hard fans only as they will be the only ones to understand the back story.
- Not as gripping as the games themselves.
- Some lacking characterization, even differing (Lirara is much more aggressive than I remember her).
Naturally it would better to play the games themselves first, as Redemption is hardly vital to understanding them yet since the series has always done a good job making the player care about the characters, Redemption gives them a little more about them. It's hardly the best sci-fi graphic novel, being a step below most others but it's also a step above most tie-ins. As it stands as a graphic novel, it's probably more of a 3 but fans should appreciate it more.
Again, only for fans.
On a side note, there are 3 others that focus on other characters and tie-in to eachother but have yet to be released in the UK.
