1.0 out of 5 stars They killed the golden goose - Hold the Line! 9 May 2012
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I played (& replayed) ME1 & 2 and all the DLC and eagerly awaited this sequel - I bought the N7 CE because I was a fanboy!
First thing to note is: it's short. Compared to the other two games, VERY short - length was / is no doubt going to be added via paid-for DLC. That said, you do (rather incongrously, given that this is one of the best SINGLE-PLAYER games franchises on the market) get online multiplayer and will NEED to play this if you want to get the 'best' ending.
The graphics & combat are much improved over previous versions but NPC interactions and plot are much worse with little to shout about in either area and everything feels downbeat, rushed and depressing.
I WAS going to go into detail about the pros & cons of this game but frankly I don't have the heart - it's time to talk about the enormous pachyderm in the room.
You see, Bioware & EA encouraged the player to invest in the characters and the universe of ME, and brilliantly gave us the feeling that our decisions mattered and had an impact on the game. They even told us explicitly that this would be especially true in this final chapter of the Commander Shepard story as the ending would reflect and incorporate all our choices from the previous games - fantastic!
Unfortunately, they lied.
99% of the game is great (despite its many flaws) but the last 1% is so stupefyingly awful that I just sat there after the game ended, staring at the screen for long minutes wondering how I'd messed up so badly to get such an appalling ending. It turns out I hadn't - Bioware had, as ALL (!) 3 of the possible endings are equally bad (and pretty much identical). I won't spoil it for you (or spare you the pain) because I actually believe that it's impossible for anyone to understand how truly awful the game ending is without playing it for yourself. You SHOULD buy this, just to experience it for yourself and see how lack of funds / the rush to market / lack of respect for the player base can cause a previously-excellent company to take a shotgun to the golden goose and destroy an otherwise superb trilogy. Bioware are due to release some free DLC in the summer to 'explain' the 'endings' but what they really need to do is fix them. Unless they do, I and many others won't be buying anything else from them or EA. (Yes, the ending - and subsequent response from EA / Bioware - really is THAT bad).

2.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the mess of an ending 24 April 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Now I will say straight if the mark that this game had me hooked and was brilliant for the most part indeed special mention goes to the story lines involving fan favourites Mordin Solous and Tali both of which were fantastically done.

However and it's a big however the ending of the game was just completely out of place with the rest of the game and indeed the whole ideal of your choices matter that the Mass Effect universe and bioware had tried to promote and in fact the ending was so bad that I actually wished I had stopped playing the game around the end of Thessia and just made up my own ending.

Had the game even had an ok ending I think I would have given this game a 100% score however due to the ending I feel it is only around a 50% or 60% or in amazon terms 2 or 3 out of 5 stars.

Bioware have accepted concerns around the ending and will be releasing a free "DLC" which they say will provide more closure some time around june/july so my reccomendation would be to wait until this comes out to see whether it solves the edning problems before buying the game.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you're in it for the story DON'T BUY THIS
I will say the game play was pretty good and the narrative hit all the right cues... up until the end.

For a game based on choice that championed unity and diversity. Read more

Ok I'll keep this short and sweet. Amazing game if you disregard the last 10-15 minutes and make up your own ending, other than that its great fun and is well written. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good up to a point
For 99% of the game this is one of the most enjoyable rides I have been on. The nonsensical ending brings the rating down though.

I would have given this 5/5 stars right up untill the terrible 3 endings...when that happened, the game left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
