4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful continuation of the story., 4 Sep 2008

I do not agree with the other reviewer, this book does well by striking new ground and further exploring the universe that is Mass Effect. It will take you to new places, show you new things and delve deeper into what you already know of.

It uses a narrative which shifts inbetween different storylines which all intertwine and seperate, sometimes giving a second and even a third perspective on events all of which are interesting and compelling. It didn't take me long to finish this book, it kept me hooked and I'm excited to continue the story in the next game in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read Revelation first..., 9 April 2009
By Stephen C. Wakeman "Syphadeus" (Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I reviewed the original paperback Mass Effect: Revelation back before the game was released - a book I enjoyed a lot.

Ascension, on the other hand, is written for a somewhat different and perhaps more hardcore audience. Unlike the first novel, there is no real introduction into this universe for the uninitiated.

The story centres on a small number of characters, one of which was originally in the first novel. It tells the tale of a sinister black ops organisation, it's mission to influence and control a young girl with psycho-kinetic ability and the struggle of those trying to protect her.

It's an interesting story for fans of the game. It delves into the Cerberus black ops group and it's enigmatic leader "The Illusive Man" - both of which are said to feature heavily in the storyline for Mass Effect 2.

Of course, this is a follow-up novel and as such it sort of assumes you've played the game and taken an interest in it. A fair assumption I'd say. But, whereas I recommended the original novel quite openly to fans of science fiction and the genre of game Mass Effect is based on, I'm hesitant to do so with Ascension. The story is more tightly focused and, in my opinion, of slightly less interest as a result and overall it's not really suitable for those without a certain level of foreknowledge.

Not a bad effort by any means, but not as strong as it's predecessor and lacking in broad appeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mass Effect 1.5, 22 Sep 2009
By Manga goat "Matt" (London, England) - See all my reviews
If you liked the game, or the 1st book, you'll like this.

Its set between the 1st and 2nd game, and focuses on the human black-ops group: Cereberus, and quite a lot on the Quarians in the 2nd half, aswell as Kahlee Sanders making a return from the 1st book.

Not quite as good as the 1st, but still a solid read, especially if you're a fan of the little universe Bioware created with Mass Effect.
