Product Description

From Amazon.com

Though it's not always obvious, much of Massive Attack's sound is informed by their time spent in the hip-hop underground. So it's only fitting that the first release on their Melankolic label is from Lewis Parker, a youngster (21 at the time of this album) with a penchant for relating his experiences in science-fiction terminology. Parker, however--well, he's not a Jedi yet. His rhymes have potential, and he has an interesting outlook, but he has yet to find the verbal flow to pull it all together, though he comes closest on "Crusades," which is a shame, as it's the album's most generic track. Still, the eight songs here do occasionally sound as if they come from a galaxy far, far away--the production incorporates sweeping Brazilian tinges, clarinets, and some great drum sounds (though without any real rhythmic innovations)--but it's grounded in the familiar (a warm needle scratch, crackle-and-pop background). The force is strong in Parker, though, and this is a promising debut. --Randy Silver

Having read the other reviews, I felt I had to explain to people what is album is like. Lewis Parker creates almost everything on this album from the beats to the rapping and it is an absolute gem. This is an artist with his own vision of hiphop and if you listen properly he'll take you into worlds of imagination and mysticism- based equally upon extrapolations of hiphop culture and Star Wars metaphors.
The production is unique, but based on the traditions of sampling that made hip hop great. He finds breaks which you've never heard before and puts them together in ways which distinguish this from ordinary rap music- This is HIP HOP! Preaching the virtues of "The ancients" and "dusty vinyl" this a connoiseurs album.
The album is generally more reflective than a lot of UK hip hop- Hip hop's always been headphone music anyway- so stick it in your discman/ walkman/ minidisc/ etc. and allow yourself to be transported. A true gem of the scene and until Black Twang and Roots Manuva kicked up the current storm- it was about the only fresh thing we had to listen to. If you don't know, then get to know...

This is a brilliant album. It's a shame it's not longer, but quality makes up for quantity. Production-wise, it's a real breath of fresh air, with a healthy arabian nights / star wars theme throughout (!) and Parker's rhymes are spot on. If you're after funky. dancefloor-filling hip hop, then forget this. But if you like it original, intelligent, and atmospheric, then this needs to be in your collection.
