I have always bought Mason Pearson brushes because they do what they are supposed to do. Untangle hair without much 'pain' and effort. The one I have just purchased it actually for my granddaughter. They also last well.If my present one wears out I will not hesitate to replace it with another one. I prefer nylon and bristle, having had both.

I have short, fine, flat hair and was looking for a brush to hopefully give volume so I opted for the bristle and nylon option. I had considered buying a M&P hair brush for some time but because of the price hesitated, now I am so glad I did. I brush my hair with a hundred strokes night and morning and started seeing the results within a week after two months my hair now has volume and holds that volume in between shampoos, also it has helped my itchy scalp. My hairdresser has also commented on how quickly my hair is growing in between cuts. I would not want to be without it now. Also I was really impressed by the supplier Sharmans Pharmacy, I ordered the brush about 4pm and was amazed to have the brush delivered next morning! Excellent supplier.

Great present as this is much better quality than an average brush, classy and worth the additional expense and matches the one at home

The usual M and P quality - but this one can pop into your hand bag or wash bag when you are on the move

A Brush To Treasure Throughout the Years 14 Aug. 2010

This is a review for a pocket or small (about 6 3/4 inches long) Mason Pearson brush made of five rings of mixed boar bristle and nylon. The longer bristles are nylon and the shorter ones are boar bristle. It is a beautiful heirloom brush worth every penny of the incredibly high price.

All of the larger Mason Pearson brushes, including this one, come with a cleaning brush, so that you can easily clean loose hairs out of your brush.

There are two things you need to know when you're ready to buy a Mason Pearson brush of any sort. One is the size: full-size (the largest size), handy (medium sized), or pocket (the smallest size). This is important not so much because of where the brush will be kept (say, in your handbag), but because of the bristle length of the various sizes. The smaller sizes have shorter bristles. The bristles have to be able to reach your scalp, and massage it and distribute the oils throughout your hair. If you want a small brush but you have thick or long hair, you'd do better with a larger size.

The other consideration is the bristle type. Do you want a mixed bristle brush like this one that is part boar bristle and part nylon? What is most comfortable and performs the best with your hair. This mixed bristle brush will work well for you if your hair is fine to normal and not too long or too thick. Otherwise, you'll need to go with the Detangler because the bristles are stiffer and can reach down through all of your hair to the scalp; the Detangler is the only Mason Pearson brush that can reach the scalp of extremely thick hair. Mason Pearson also makes an All Boar Bristle Brush for finer or shorter hair but I have never tried it.

So, this mixed bristle brush is for normal, finer, and shorter hair. I bought it for myself but my husband uses it; although I have short hair it is very thick and straight and coarse and the brush bristles won't reach all the way to my scalp, but slides over the top hairs. My husband loves it dearly though, and really enjoys using it himself, or as a special treat, allowing me to brush his hair. This makes the expense of a Mason Pearson brush well worth the money--it's a luxury item and the purchase is an investment--but it's worth it. If you're the type of person who would rather enjoy an evening at home having your hair brushed by your spouse instead of going to dinner and a movie, then you can justify the cost. That's how we did it :)

Highly recommended.

These may be counterfeit. Mason Pearson does not supply to any online retailer, including Amazon. 8 July 2014

The first time I used the brush the gold lettering started to come off. This didn't seem right to me so I wrote to Mason Pearson directly. Below is their detailed reply. It is worth noting that I never use hand lotion or products in my hair other than shampoo, conditioner and water. These brushes are an investment, and I would rather spend a little more and have the confidence of an authentic product from an authorized retailer.

Thank you for your enquiry. We do not sell online, neither do we supply any websites with our products. As we are experiencing problems with forgeries at the moment, we cannot guarantee that the hairbrushes any website is selling are genuine Mason Pearson products as we do not supply direct any online stockist. Consequently, ‘Amazon’ is not an authorised stockist.

The idea of forgeries as you would imagine is to pass them off as the original article that is why we can usually only tell if a hairbrush is a forgery, other than by purchasing through an authorised stockist, is by one of our brushmakers actually examining it, which means we may have to dismantle then reassemble the hairbrush in this process. There are usually no “tell tail signs to identify a replica” even the boxes and the enclosed leaflets have been very cleverly copied on the forgeries we have come across.

Mason Pearson hairbrushes are still made virtually by hand as they were over 125 years ago when Mason Pearson Bros. Ltd. was founded. Consequently, as applies to the uniqueness of any hand-made item there is likely to be a slight variation in each item produced. Therefore, the impression (by hand) of the Mason Pearson logo and the amount of gold paint used may vary from brushmaker to brushmaker and hairbrush to hairbrush. So it is quite acceptable for there to be some variation. Also, the gold paint we use is not made up of the same properties as it used to be as some of the ingredients may no longer be available or have changed over the years and that can change the adhesive qualities A classic example of this is where paint use to contain lead, which of course, we are sure you are aware is now illegal but this did change the constituents that paint was made up of.

This also applies to the plastic we use in the making of the hairbrush back/handle, they are not made up of the same properties as they used to be as some of the ingredients may no longer be available or have changed over the years and that can change the plastics qualities, the hairbrush back/handle is made of Cellulose Acetate. The old type of plasticiser (DMP) cannot be used for health reasons in the processing so is banned by the REACH regulations. So, as you can see and for good reason some ingredients are restricted by law these days. Consequently, we can only use the best raw materials that are AVAILABLE to us at the given time, which of course can change over time. The stamping is allied to this in that the newer plasticiser makes it harder to stick the gold to the surface.

You might also like to bear in mind other factors that can affect the gold paint. The natural chemicals/oils from the hand/body can attack the gold paint and tarnish the gold effect, as can chemical residue from products such as hand/body lotions/perfumes/deodorant/hair products etc. and sometimes where hairbrushes are kept in bathrooms the moisture in the air can attack the gold paint, or where the hairbrush is kept where it is likely to be in the sun.

We hope this information is helpful to you.

Best wishes,
Mason Pearson Bros. Ltd.

My 6-year-old Now Likes Her Hair Brushed 4 July 2012

I never thought I would pay so much for a hairbrush. However, one afternoon I was at my sister's house and my daughter needed her hair brushed. Normally she wiggles, whines, and otherwise fusses as I brush her hair, but somehow this brush didn't bother her a bit. I immediately asked my sister about the brush and purchased one shortly after. It turns out my sister cherished her Mason Pearson pocket brush, and had purchased it over 10 years ago.

I have several different types of brushes at home, but none seemed to make the chore of combing out my daughters long, fine hair any easier. So we resorted to washing and conditioning her hair nearly every night before combing it through. In the morning I would apply detangling spray prior to brushing it out gently. She must have a very sensitive scalp, but the whining drove me crazy. She no longer fights me on this, and a peaceful morning is worth it's weight in gold. Which is about how expensive the brush was, but in our case, well worth it.

Love Mason Pearson! 14 Aug. 2014
By babydoc21 - Published on Amazon.com
There have been a lot of doubts over the authenticity of Mason Pearson brushes sold on Amazon. I'd recently bought a brush on Amazon and decided to contact Mason Pearson for a price comparison which is when they told me that there were plenty of forgeries on the market. I decided to return the brush, unopened, letting Amazon know that i was worried it was a fake. Unfortunately this and a couple of similar complaints by other customers resulted in the seller being taken off the Amazon Marketplace. This is when i contacted Mason Pearson again and with the information they provided, i checked out the brush, kindly provided to me from the Amazon seller in question. I also compared it with an older brush i had, which was bought directly from the manufacturer.
For starters, the quality of both the brushes was absolutely the same. The same packaging, the same good quality hard plastic, the same rubber pad etc.
I've outlined a general guide below-(this was for my large pure boar bristle hairbrush, model B1)-
1) The name on the handle should be in goldblocking and sunken into the plastic.
2) The name on the handle should say:
The
Mason Pearson
London England
Pure Bristle (varies with brush type)
3) There should be a hole at the end of the brush only, the side opposite to the handle.
4) There should be 16 rows (or 8 rings) of tufts (varies with brush size)
5) When you squeeze down on the brush you should hear it whistle or wheeze as the air flows out of the cushion and the cushion should bounce back at the same speed.
6) This is for the ruby brushes only- at first glance the plastic on the handle seems almost black, but when you hold it up against light, it glows a wonderful deep ruby red.
7) A drastic check is to pull out a small piece of the black bristle and set fire to it. The smell of singed hair would be clear or a plastic chemical odour would be the alternative.
8) Another drastic check, and this is really not necessary, is to take out the top of the pad and you will find a stamp on the plastic head inside.
I don't know if all sellers on Amazon are selling authentic brushes but i believe this general guide can help customers interested in owning a Mason Pearson brush. One may wonder why Mason Pearson would suggest that these brushes are possibly fake? Well, for one, they have no way of knowing if these brushes have been obtained from their authorized seller in the US. And secondly, these brushes are being sold at a discounted price on Amazon, something that i believe the manufacturer does not approve of. Anyone spending 150-200$ on a brush deserves to know they own an authentic product and at the same time be able to take advantage of the discounts provided by sellers on Amazon. With Amazon's excellent return policy, we have nothing to worry about.

The brush is great! It is exactly what we were looking for. Our granddaughter loves it. She can brush her hair without getting it tangled. We have a Mason Pearson brush we have used for the past 35 years and it is still perfect; well worth every penny spent.
