This is a romance set in the Lakota reservation of SD. Names have been changed but if you're familiar with the state you can figure it out.
Jacob is an Indian who has left his people, is trying to hide and keep his young charge safe.
Mary Beth is looking for somewhere to belong, and she finds it with a young girl and a masked man.
But there is a dangerous mystery floating nearby.
If you like contemporary western romance with mystery, read this book and series, I highly recommend it.
Jacob walk in on the murder of his friends which left his face disfigured. He wears a mask that covers his nose and half his face. He has been hiding the albino young daughter of those friends for fear the killer will come after her based on the legend about her having powers from her grandmother that someone wants to possess by killing her.
Mary Beth moved to the Lakota reservation to start over and also to take over as the town's veterinarian. One of the biggest clients of the clinic is a ranch where Jacob is the foreman over the animals. She doesn't know what to make of this mysterious man who hides his face from the world. His constant blowing of hot and cold towards her leaves her even more confused.
The two bond when the horses come down with a strange disease and over the girl he is hiding from everyone. As with the first book the authors gives us as readers another close look at the Lakota tribe and in the case of this book the horses and cattle taken care of by the Lakota's.
Jacob doesn't know for sure what attacked him and killed his friend was a spirit, beast or man and refuses to get to close to Mary Beth even though he is very attracted to her and longs for normal life but how can he have that with all the outer scars he carries and the threat.
This one has quite the explosive ending that leaves you wondering how these two can ever find a HEA.
