Review

'Rich in detail, but always to the point, the captivating narration - where dry facts and figures are interspersed with very personal comments, humorous anecdotes and, not least in the chapters devoted to international relations, frank character portraits of other political leaders - takes the reader on an educational journey through the stages of Botswana's graduation from a poor, marginalised British protectorate to a modern multiparty democracy, classified by the World Bank as an upper middle-income country.' Tor Sellström - Conflict Trends

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from Africa 18 July 2011
By G. Dart
Format:Paperback
A terrific book that is particularly good at describing his early upbringing when he would on occasion not be scared to challenge 'traditional' views about how an individual should earn and deserve respect and then at capturing the excitement and anticipation that surrounded the birth of Botswana as an independent state. In itself that is a heartening tale of cooperation and respect between the colonial administrators at the time and the newly emerging national political leaders amongst whom Quett Masire was of course very prominent. The author also shares very valuable insights into his leadership style, which was of course extremely successful both prior to, during and after his long stint as president - the book should be on the reading lists of any African degree programmes in politics and / or leadership. Anyone involved in the birth and early nurture of South Sudan would do well to have it on their shelves!
