The complete guide to the most beautiful GP car ever, 30 Aug 2003
This review is from: Maserati 250F (Hardcover)
The Maserati 250F is for many (myself included) the most beautiful Grand Prix car ever. Its six year GP career saw it starting the first and last races of the 2.5 litre formula. It was driven by almost everyone from Fangio and Moss down to a bewildering number of privateers.
Tracing the history of this wonderful model is therefore not something to be undertaken lightly - Denis Jenkinson did a pretty good but very concise job of it and I'm very grateful that David McKinney, a historian with a keen eye for detail, has continued Jenks' work with this excellent volume.
McKinney has summarised the design and development, works and privateer GP racing history, and 'afterlife' of the Maserati 250F brilliantly in this book. He explains the plethora of different variants of the 250F, shows the tangled history of every individual chassis and sketches the stories of the personalities in the cars and behind the scenes.
He is particularly good on the cars' post-GP careers, especially in the Southern Hemisphere.
The book is nicely laid-out, with a good selection of pictures, it's all well-written but feels just a little too short - although all the detail you could want is here a few digressions and a bit more background would be even more irresistible.
Highly recommended, should become a standard reference work.
