Really good 15 Jan 2011

Format:MP3 Download
This is very good indeed, and a true bargain at this price. I think it's better than the Tebaldi version (despite the presence of Bjorling on that version), which is also available from Amazon mp3 at the same price. The conducting is superb - each bar is perfectly phrased, and the orchestra is in fine voice. As also is Callas, combining dynamic singing with passionate voice-acting. However, not everyone warms to Callas's voice (a bit harsh - expressive, but not beautiful) - perhaps it's an acquired taste (but at this price, you can afford to acquire it). Sound-quality is good or above, but obviously not up to present-day standards.

Cavalleria Rusticana
What a bargain! A bit of the opening music is missing, but the rest is superb. The only drawback is, that it's continuous, with no separate tracks, but this is also an advantage. With other recordings, there is always a break in continuity when it goes from one track to the next, and this is one opera where continuity is so important. I love it, and would recommend it highly to any "verismo" opera lover. Tebaldi's sobs are heartbreaking.

Thrilling Cav/Pag recording 20 Aug 2005
By Scott Jelsey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Muti's recording of the Cavalleria Rusicana, Pagliacci is one of the very best. Carreras is most impassioned, singing both tenor roles. He is in gorgeous voice here - one of his very greatest recordings. Caballe is exquisite, if a little detached drmatically, as Santuzza. Still, a vocally sumptuous reading. Scotto, on the other hand is completely on fire as Nedda - wow! Her upper register is not always as secure as Caballe's, but she has the verismo style in her voice like few other modern sopranos. Muti conducts a taut, intense reading and the recorded sound is exceptional. Don't miss this one...
