Product Description

Synopsis

The Maasai of Kenya have made their way into the 20th century with their ancient customs and the structure of their society preserved to unusual extent. This is the book that made Carol Beckwith's worldwide reputation as a photographer. Written by the distinguished Maasai scholar Tepilit Ole Saitoti, it documents their living story. It recounts the ancient legends, reveals the songs and prayers and vividly recounts the rites of passage for a Maasai - childhood, initiation, warrior rank and finally elderhood. The daily work of maintaining the herds, beading skirts and building huts and kraals; the warriors' games, dances and flirtations; the elders' quiet moments of contemplation; the feasts and ceremonies are all portrayed here in Carol Beckwith's photographs.

Tepilit Ole Saitoti is a real genius. Being a genuine Maasai makes this book all the more special. The book was a real gem to read every stage was thrilling, taking you right through the stages of a Massai's life. It really focused on the everyday tasks that are undertaken by men, women and children, no stone was left unturned, I could very much imagine myself there with the Maasai as they performed these tasks. The layout of the book was also good, taking you on a journey of a Massai from childhood right through to senior elderhood, supplying you with enough information to make you want to read what was going to happen at the next life stage. Another book by Tepilit Ole Saitori, The Worlds of a Maasai Warrior: An Autobiography, is a great book to accompany this one, but this time concentrating on the warrior period of a Maasai's life. In depth and written from the heart a great read along with this. The photographs in this book, as taken by Carol Beckwith, are also a real treat. Each photo is carefully placed to represent the text and is outstanding in capturing the true nature of the Maasai as they go about their day to day business. To make the book all the more special, Carol has added drawings of such things as spears, and cooking utensils, etc. All, once again, carefully placed in line with the text. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in understanding people of other cultures, or to people that are passionate about Africa or people in general. It is a real insight into the Maasai and an insight into a very talented author. It is a book that you will want to keep for many years, and one of those books that you will always be able to go back to and still be enthralled by these amazing people, time and time again.
