Product Description

Sober and disillusioned with London, tabloid journalist Stephen Larkin reluctantly accepts an assignment to cover a gangland funeral back home in Newcastle. Several years earlier he had left sick and disgusted, vowing never to return, but the pull of the city, and the promise of a juicy story, finally persuades him to return. While there, Larkin's old flame Charlotte asks him to check out the alleged suicide of her friend Mary - a course of action that will leave Larkin bruised, battered and with some painful memories of the city he was trying to forget. Dark, compelling and relentless, Mary's Prayer is a razor-edged crime debut from a powerful new voice in crime fiction.

This is one great book i picked this up from a cheap book shop and boy im so glad i got it. Im going to get the other two of his books. Hes kept the book funny and serious. Plenty of bits to keep you laughing and plenty to make you wonder what will happen next. Fair enough its a short book but its really well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, 20 July 2011

This review is from: Mary's Prayer (Hardcover)
I first read Martyn Waites through the Joe Donovan books and enjoyed them very much - especially The Mercy Seat which I think is his best book to date.
This novel is typical of his style and as enjoyable as the Joe Donovan collection and recommend it as a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars modern noir at its best, uk style, 6 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mary's Prayer (Hardcover)
noir is a stylised genre that has been done to death. or has it? if you take raymond chandler and transport him to late 20th century england, you might end up with martyn waites (if that isn't a cliche of its own). professional northern miserablist -i mean the protagonist, not the author- returns to the north east to cover a story, but there's something more sinister going on and here's the man to get to the bottom of it. drugs, sadism, ex-girlfriends, and lloyd cole references all add up to modern noir at its best, uk style. if you like the noir genre, you'll love this.
