Product Description

Product Description

Targeted at younger readers, the books in this series tell the lives of famous people from the past. They are also suitable for older readers with learning difficulties. The text is accompanied by photographs of key events, people, and places. This title talks about Mary Seacole, a Jamaican nurse who helped in the Crimean War. She went to join Florence Nightingale but was turned down because she was black, and instead showed great bravery working on her own. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Author

I am so pleased to see the customer review posted on Amazon.co.uk about this biography of Mary Seacole. Thank you to the reviewer from Kent, UK. Mary Seacole's story is in stark contrast to that of her better-known contemporary, Florence Nightingale. She has been described as 'the other lady with a lamp', and if this little book helps inform teachers and their children (5-8) about the basic facts of her life, then it will have succeeded in its aim, and this eminent Victorian woman will not be forgotten by today's generation. It was a pleasure to research and write. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

An excellent book about the life of Mary Seacole who nursed and became famous during the Crimean war, when she cared for soldiers. Born in Jamaica, she learnt about the healing powers of plants and cared for the sick. This book uses simple language and is suitable to use in KS1. It does not have a content page, but has an index, important dates, and key words(glossary)section. A very good book to compare and contrast against the life of Florence Nightingale. An excellent book to use with young children to teach history
