mary seacole 18 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This the story of a black Jamaican(1805-1881)who traveled ,at the age of 50 ,to London where her services were rebuffed and then onto the Crimea where she set up the British hotel for recuperating troops and became a legend like Florence Nightingale and Dr.Sutherland.
The author tells the story as she imagines what Mrs. Seacole was thinking which is a bit distracting.
The book is well written, researched and easy to read. There are good notes, referances and bibliography plus excellent illustrations and photographs.

book worth reading 21 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Interesting and well written book I would not term her a heroine but she certainly was a very resourceful and charismatic character. The details of the Crimea very well detailed and mirrored the history of events I had read in previous books covering this war. A must read book many friends have now read it and all very impressed.

What a Star 4 Sep 2005
By Cj
Format:Paperback
One of the key issues in this fascinating book is the stark social and behavioural comparison between Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. We have all been told at school and throughout history of the wonders of Florence and her lamp - well time now to glance at what Mary did!
An account of unbridled energy, commitment, and optimism, one feels that the author, to a degree, does not fully capitalise on the contribution that Mary Seacole made.
However a superb book and a telling lesson in how to fight racial and class prejudice.
