This is the familiar tale of the enmity between Elizabeth I of England and Mary Queen of Scots, but retold by Scotland's unofficial Poet Laureate with a ferocious iconoclasm. Needless to say, the play ends when Mary Queen of Scots gets her head chopped off! A modern Scottish classic, first staged at the Edinburgh Lyceum in 1987, Liz Lochhead's Mary Queen of Scots is republished here in a revised version with a new introduction by the author. The play is enormously popular with Scottish schools and drama groups.

I purchased this book as I was cast in a production of the play. A Great play but the book is poorly made and the pages begin to fall out. I wasn't the only one in my group to find this and I'm in the process of glueing my pages back together.

These plays are both great - Dracula is slightly more accessible if you're not too hot on your Scots, but both explore the same general theme - the difficulty of being female in a society where the rules aren't created by you but you are still expected to live by them. Just one query - why is this out of print when it's still on the syllabus for Advanced Higher English Lit in Scotland?

I saw this at the Edinburgh festival, and our local school is planning on putting on a production of this in the summer...its fantastic! Liz Lockhead writes fluid dialogue with graphic reality...its great!
