Product Description

Mary Potter is recognized as one of the foremost British women painters of her time. This book traces her career from the Beckenham School of Art and the Slade, through to her early involvement with the New English Arts Club and the Seven and Five, going on to explore her continental wanderings and her marriage in the 1920s, the war years and the burgeoning of her career after her move to Suffolk. The book, written by Potter's son, uses his own memories of his mother, the memories of Potter's surviving friends and the diaries of Potter's husband Stephen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Art History and Sensitive Biography, 16 May 2004
This review is from: Mary Potter: A Life of Painting (Hardcover)
With little space for a large subject: I'll start by saying that three of my favorite 20th century paintings appear in this book, together with many other fine works. Plate 10, "Golden Kipper" is an astonishingly graceful evocation of a humble but beautiful treasure from the sea. Plate 12, "Country Studio" has a charming balance of soft color and space. Plate 13, "Rising Moon" is a rich harmony of muted warm tones that bathe wall trees sky and misty moon: calm Romanticism at its best. The book's text is a splendidly well written rounded account of Mary Potter's life, family, times, and the artistic environments which shaped her remarkable genius. A great book for lovers of art and students of 20th century English life.
