Product Description

Why has Miss Mary Bennet been living a lie? Because she doesn't want to get married. Ever. But when Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy raise the Bennet family fortunes, Mary tosses off the deceptions used to keep suitors at bay—her unnecessary spectacles and annoying manner—declaring to Mr. and Mrs. Bennet that she will remain a spinster for life. Intrigued by this remarkable transformation, Elizabeth Darcy invites Mary to Pemberley, where Mary falls into an incredible adventure that could be ripped from the pages of one of her favorite Gothic novels.

I did enjoy this story, but only until I got about one third in when for some reason it turned into a melodrama which never quite seemed to fit.

I agree I liked the transformation of the character of Mary, and I could see this as a real possibility.

However, new characters for me were introduced but never quite developed and with one in mind in particular, I was left wondering at the end of the book why the character was even written in the first place. Without giving spoilers, I think the author tried to get us to second guess ourselves with what we thought might happen to keep us interested. Herein lies the problem. I think I would have found what I thought was going to happen far more interesting than what actually did.

I am glad I purchased this book, but by the end, I felt like I had read two different stories from two different authors.

Well written and gives a very different interpretation of the P&P story. I loved the development of the character of Mary and her growth in the whole book. The interaction with the other characters gave a good depth and likeability to the story and the characters.

I have really enjoyed this book. Excellent story line. I felt the original characters were true to P and P with the new ones fitting in very well. I found it hard to put down with such a good plot.

Enjoyable read,I particularly liked the way Mary changed from an ugly duckling into a swan. New characters were believable and fitted in to the plot well. Add to this the exciting side plot and it makes for a well constructed story.

I love Jane Austen books and S.M. Klassen has captured the feel of a Jane Austen book with this book. I have to say that it was a little more suspenseful and had me not wanting to put it down. Looking forward to reading more of S.M. Klassen's work in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary continues... 15 Oct 2013
By Scott Lee - Published on
S.M. Klassen takes on the themes of early 1800s English society through Mary Bennet, middle sister to Elizabeth from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. There is plenty of class snobbery, manners, and superficial vanities Mary must wade through to become an independent and freer thinking woman. She even cultivates a physical and personal undesirability so as not to be forced into an unwanted marriage. She seeks spinsterhood rather than the status or wealth that a correct marriage would offer. Yet, some surprising events serve Mary well in wending her way through the social demands of the gentry and the aristocracy. The expectations and direction of her life shift as she finds an unexpected path. This is a wonderful read that honors the Austen tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brava! 2 Oct 2013

Brava to Klassen! This author took a minor character from Pride and Prejudice and developed her into someone we cheer for, rather than dismiss.
Mary manages to deal with her tribulations and adventures with growing aplomb and Klassen keeps us cheering to the end. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Mary is delightful! 3 Nov 2013

Wonderful twist on Mary. Some books have Mary growing from annoying into a nice over the whole plot, instead, Mary gets a great shift into annoying for a very good reason! Yes, she grows throughout the book, but I started liking her a whole lot more a whole lot sooner than in the usual Mary books. This is a very nice, enjoyable book for those who enjoy the P and P world.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book! 1 Nov 2013

For some reason I was a little hesitant to buy this book. Maybe, because I have chosen not to get others dealing with Kitty or Mary because the excerpts did not interest me.

Surprise! I really enjoyed this variation. It was well written and had a surprising plot that held my interest until I had read it almost straight through. Very well done, and I look forward to other writings by this author.
