Great charachterisation of Mary- not always so meek! Lovely view of their relationship. Very real.
Also...this film definitely brings alive the charachter of Joseph - the foster father of Jesus and other persons involved in the events of Jesus life, the disciples, Mary's parents, her cousin Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Herod, Pilate, Mary Magdalene...
The sense of the political situation at the time is put across effectively. These certainly seem 'little' people in the big power 'cogs' of the time.
To compare fairly with 'The Passion'...I guess this film whisks through the events of Christs suffering and death...however the dread of that final event certainly is there throughout... The film succeeeds in bringing through a sense of the power of that sacrifice.
Some clangers theologically - which is a pity...Mary would never have said her mother Anna would never be more merciful than God himself...! The Gospels communciate clearly that God cannot be surpassed in anything...much less mercy!
Great ending. Resurrection subtly but powerfully portrayed. How amazing that news of the Christ spreads through the world from such times, and events and very human people.
