As a Marian Catholic this book is a must have, Beautifully presented with thought and there is something to meditate upon on every page. Illustrated with Christian paintings from the distant past to today this volume is inexpensive and well worth every penny. It will, I think, also appeal to non Christians as well. Six stars from me if I could!

Love this book 26 Dec. 2009
By paperdollmom - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I came across this in our local bookstore, and fell in love with it. It is somewhat a combination of art and biblical info. Every other page is a piece of art, with the opposite page telling about the picture and how it relates to Mary. There is generally scriptures listed for you to look up as well if you wanted further reading. The artwork displayed within the book is beautiful, along with a lot of symbolism between Mary and other women in the Bible that I hadn't realized. A nice book to have! I would, however, recommend having some sort of a magnifying bookmark or something like that, as it is a smaller book, and some of the details in the pictures is hard to see.

Beautiful, but Catholics do NOT worship Mary! 2 May 2010
By Peggy Bowes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
As an orthodox Catholic who is very devoted to the Blessed Mother, I enjoy collecting books about Mary and studying the various ways she has been represented in art. I came across this book in a chain bookstore and had to buy it, primarily for the beautiful artwork. I do want to clarify the wording on the back of the book-- the author (or publisher?) uses the phrase "worship of the Blessed Virgin," which is NOT correct! Catholics never have and never will worship Mary. Instead, we HONOR Mary as the Mother of God and the greatest of saints. I don't know if the authors are Catholic or not, but everything I have read so far coincides with my Marian study and research (with the exception of the "worship" error).

That said, the book is still very worthwhile. It is thoroughly researched and anyone interested in learning more about Mary will enjoy reading about her Old Testament archetypes, family and childhood (based on apochryphal writings), her symbols and icons, her life with Jesus and role in the gospels, her portrayal in the East, and her devotions under various titles. Each page of the book has a work of art on one side and a short description of the Marian aspect of the painting or sculpture on the other. Naturally, the details of each work of art are included in case the reader would like to investigate further.

See before ordering. 13 Jun. 2010

This is a wonderful book with informative and inspiring text and pictures of beautiful quality. But be aware that it is a very unusual size book. It is about four inches by six inches and two inches thick. I recommend seeing it before ordering. You may find it awkward and difficult to hold and read.

A beautiful little art book 22 July 2010
By Mary T. Graffeo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This latest addition to my mini art book library, "Mary," is truly delightful and quite beautiful. All the greatest artists have painted the Virgin Mary, and their wonderful works are represented here in one small book. This series of small art books is great to take along on a vacation or relax with at home. The art is so well printed in full color on very good paper. I love these books!

wonderful sacrament gift 18 May 2011
By baabaa - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this as a First Communion gift for my godchild. The artwork is captivating, even to a second grader, and gives information about Mary and her symbols. Because of the brevity of each explanation and the artwork on the facing page, it is not overwhelming, even for an inexperienced reader. My godchild loves it.
