How delightful to discover a heroine of the 20th Century who had apparently disappeared from history - until Jane Conway decided to tell her life story. Mary Borden, an American, not only set up and ran mobile hospitals in two world wars for the less than appreciative French, but in between managed to write a dozen best selling novels and form lifelong friendships with Noel Coward and Winston Churchill! Her romantic and family life (there were three in her marriage) would have been enough to fill a novel, but the author manages to combine a page turning narrative with a very persuasive case for her subject to be up there with Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton as angels of the battlefield. Jane Conway is also a discovery. She writes very well and although scholarly in her approach, she never lets her attention to detail spoil the flow of the story - unusually when reading biographies I couldn't put it down. I look forward to her next subject.

A friend recommended this book to me and I was (perhaps shamefully) surprised that I got so caught up in the narrative of this extraordinary woman's life. For me this is not just a welcome account of a largely forgotten figure, it is above all a great story.
Like the other reviewer, I didn't really expect a biography to be such a page-turner! It helps that Ms Conway's style flows so gracefully and that she is so politely unintrusive; drawing on a mass of research which is woven skilfully into the prose she leaves reader to make their own judgements about the moral and social complexities that are raised in the telling of Mary Borden's story. Her subject is a mass of seeming contradictions, that are only partially explicable by reference to the social and political climate of the early to mid-20th Century, and by Mary Borden's wealth and privilege.
Also welcome to me was the author's restraint in not filling out the narrative with imagined scenes or conversations. Everything she writes about is supported by references, either to documents or to personal communications, so I felt confident that I could trust the veracity of what I was reading. When occasionally there is no recorded information, for instance about May's reaction to an important personal event, there is no tedious surmise about what might have been.
This was a complex and powerful woman, and her story is powerfully told. Thoroughly recommended.

I do not read biographies very often, but this one is a brilliant page turner. May Borden's life is quite extraordinary and I was fascinated by how prolific a writer she was. Jane Conway's style is both gripping and understated leaving the reader to make their own decisions about all the characters. I highly recommend this wonderful book.
