Product Description

Product Description

From basic family suppers to large parties for friends, this cookbook features over 150 dishes suitable for every occasion. It is aimed at those who have little time to spend on complicated dishes, using simple and ready-prepared ingredients to create imaginative menus.

“I always like to think of my cooking as being Cordon Bleu made easy. I have cut out all the long processes, yet I do not need to rely on packets and convenience foods. I always like to use fresh season ingredients, as I think this is the best and healthiest way in which to feed my family and friends at home.

Cooking has changed throughout the years. Quick-frying or stir-frying are relatively new techniques, and sauces are lighter now – more than anything because of new ingredients like low-fat crème fraîche and fromage frais. These, plus the new yoghurts, have added so much to the flavours of foods and to the general excitement of eating. However, do not worry; before I even put pen to paper on this book, I went round all the big shops in London and major supermarkets near and far just to see what was available, and where. To me there is no point in writing a book if the ingredients I use are only available from rarefied sources. Everything I mention and cook with here should be readily available in your local good shops or supermarkets.” --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I collect cookbooks, and have all the 'trendy' chef books, all the classics and all the Delia's. This book was a present from my mother and I was initially disgusted... so staid looking. I soon changed my ideas, her Canterbury tart is the best apple pie recipe I have ever tasted. EVERYONE that has tasted it has asked for the recipe! I especially recommend the mincepie recipe, amongst many others. The book has fantastic, easy and very tasty recipes for all occasions. They are really good recipes that you can depend on to turn out right...looking just like the photos! I do not know why this woman has not knocked Delia off her throne... shes brilliant!

I had to buy this when I saw it listed on Amazon as it was one of the few Mary Berry books that I did not already have in my collection.
Yes, the cover looks slightly dated & she has published a lot more books since this one but still I found a number of recipes to try & which I will use time & time again.
I really cannot rate Mary Berry recipes highly enough as every recipe is straightforward, does not involve numerous ingredients & always turns out brilliantly!
I have numerous cookery books but would rate my collection of Mary Berry & Rachel Allen books as being the ones I use most often.

I have most of Mary's cookery books, and this is one of my favourites and it is used on a regular basis. Quite simply, there are hardly any silly recipes here - instead there are lots of economical, tasty, simple and time saving recipes. I think it is great that these recipes give you detailed guidelines on preparing ahead.

Mary has also included lots of basic tips, eg what to keep in your store cupboard, how to make a proper stock from a carcass to using your freezer. She has even included ideas for tasty sandwich fillings - far cheaper and tastier than ready made shop bought.

I have been making Mary's very best chocolate cake for years - Mary's right, everyone loves this cake; it is the best.
