Book Description

Mary Berry is one of Britain’s most respected and well-loved gurus of the kitchen. The undisputed ‘Queen of the Aga’ has been the focus of many television shows and regularly contributes her expertise on Woman’s Hour. The recent hit BBC show The Great British Bake Off has once again put Mary back into the limelight and has reignited a passion for baking across the nation. Inspired by domestic science classes at school, Mary took a catering course at her local college before gaining a qualification from the Cordon Bleu school in Paris. After a stint working for the Electricity Board where she demonstrated to new owners of electric cookers how to operate them by cooking a Victoria sponge, and then as editor for Housewife and Ideal Home magazine, Mary published her first cookbook, The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, in 1970 and hasn’t looked back since. As well as cookery books, Mary has collaborated with her daughter Annabel to produce their own range of dressings and sauces which are now sold worldwide. But her personal life has also been touched by tragedy, as her son William was killed in a car accident at the age of just 19. With over 70 cookery books under her belt, there is no doubt that Mary Berry is one of Britain’s most successful cookery writers. Awarded the CBE in 2012, her gentle personality and classic ‘family’ cooking style are a remarkable contrast to some of the more outspoken celebrity television chefs – just one of the reasons why, even after over forty years in the industry, she is so well loved. This is her fascinating story.

It would appear that anyone can write a biography about you, even if they have never met you. So this book has been written purely from facts that anyone can get if they want to. I would wait until Mary Berry's story comes out where she, herself, endorses the book and has been interviewed to give you all the details. It won't be long now.

Not worth the money. If you love Mary Berry then buy the official book which I have bought too. It is a MUCH better read. I struggled with this book and its likely to find its way to a charity store near me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! 18 Nov. 2013
This book was bought for me by my Dad because he knows how much I like Mary Berry. Unfortunately, he wasted his money. The author is unlucky that the book has come out in the same year as Mary Berry's autobiography. However, it is hard to forgive him for his lack of personal knowledge about Mary. His information comes mainly from old newspaper/magazine articles and Mary's appearance on Desert Island Discs.A shocking lack of knowledge has led to the author padding out the book's pages with completely unnecessary information such as: the history of cooking/cooking appliances, a potted history of women's magazines, how celebrity chefs effect consumerism, Agas past and present, the cultural and social importance of cookery shows, ageism in the media, etc. If you want to know about any of these topics, you may like this book. However, if you want to know more about Mary Berry, buy her autobiography. I hope I get it for Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS 7 Mar. 2013
I didn't know much about Mary Berry when I bought this book and I honestly wasn't sure how much I'd like it... but I was pleasantly surprised! This biography is factual, witty and laced with humour. I've already passed it onto my partner who loved it too. Whether you're already a Mary Berry fan or relatively new to her, I guarantee you'll enjoy this read. I hope A.S. Dagnell pens another biography!
