"Marxism: A Graphic Guide" is a rather curious cartoonesque offering as it incorporates some basic ideas about Marx mixed in with some history as well as deeper aspects such as the contribution of Gramsci and the Frankfurt School (neo-Marxism). Black and white sketchings abound here on every page (as you would expect from the title) and bubbles are used to give Marx a voice in first person format throughout the 176 pages. Captions are also used to provide a 'voice' to a broad range of historical notables from Hegel to Engels, and Lenin to Fidel Castro.
The language used and general tone are also hard to pin down as the accompanying narrative veers from the simplistic (e.g. "The Prussian state asked the French authorities to give Marx a hard time. He was duly thrown out of Paris in 1845". P.10) to the more complex (e.g. "Enlightenment empiricism has led to a materialistic view of the world" P.33 and "There is no verifiable Cartesian ego on which the images can play out". P.147).
Overall, a useful little offering, especially at the price and an interesting anecdotal addition for the more experienced reader in this area. A particular strength is its explanation of neo-Marxist ideas in the 20th century; however it does spend a rather large section on post-modernism. Note that this book doesn't always pander to Marxist sympathies. It's descriptive at times and subjective at other times e.g. Stalin is given both barrels for his dictatorship policies and a 10 point critique of Marxism is offered at the conclusion (p.171) as well as a glossary of terms.
This is a different kind of read as it's a broad sweeping (too ambitious?) part-picture and part-narrative book, but the beginner would probably benefit from also having a text that explores and explains the essential basics of Marxism in greater detail (rather than veering off into a 'Fukuyama versus Derrida' debate etc).

This book is a must for anybody who is after the history and philosophy of Marxism. It is a very easy book to read and has illustrations on every page (just to get the idea over) which makes for an entertaining and educational experience.

At first, I will admit I was a little sceptical about how the book would perform. I think what's clear is after only 5 or 10 ten pages into the book that.. it's concise and gets straight to the point. Almost like a nicely written fact file turn story. Before I go into detail about the actual content, I will just add - The illustrations on each page are quite good with alot of attention focused on the presentation of the book. Now, the actual content is good. I think for me, a semi-amateur on Marxism.. it definitely provided me with some backdrop information aswell as development of his ideas. However, if you thought it was purely to do with Karl Marx - Obviously there is alot to do with Hegel.
