Product Description

Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne took a little reprint series called X-MEN and turned it into the all-new, all-different titan that conquered comicdom. Experience the thrills and excitement of these classic tales as the X-Men battle the mutant menace Proteus, the trickster Arcade (with a little help from the web-slinging wonder, Spider-Man) and the White Queen! Witness the emergence of Jean Grey as the Phoenix, Colossus' transformation into the Proletarian, and the first ever appearances of Emma Frost, the Hellfire Club, disco-queen Dazzler and Kitty Pryde! Featuring an introduction by the X-Father himself, Chris Claremont, and an awesome annual with art by George P rez, this one's a must-have, True Believer! COLLECTING: X-MEN(1963) 122-131, ANNUAL 3

5.0 out of 5 stars Things get serious...a la Proteus and a taste of Phoenix! 28 Feb 2012

This is one of my favorite Uncanny X-Men Masterworks volumes by far, as it contains some of John Byrne's best art and riveting storytelling by Chris Claremont. Collecting Issues 122-131 and Annual #3, this TPB features a battle against the crazed video game villain Arcade, who kidnaps some of the X-Men and places them in Murder World. I particularly love the fight scenes between the X-Men and Arcade's murderbots, and here the reader gets to see Cyclops' 2nd mutant power, which can only be described as super-spatial awareness. I mean, how else could he bounce an Optic beam off dozens of different surfaces and take out multiple targets?? Also, the brainwashing of Colossus! The second arc chronicles the X-Men's battle with the reality-warping Proteus, which not only has physical but also psychological after-effects for our (un)merry mutants. This battle was not like fighting Magneto or The Brotherhood, but more like hunting down a serial killer or a homicidal crack-addict. All I can say is, I feel for Wolverine (ouch!) The third and final arc collected in this volume gives us hints of the Dark Phoenix saga to come, as the X-Men have their first encounter with members of The Hellfire Club and Jean Grey starts to go off the deep end. Plus, the debut of Dazzler! What more can any X-fan ask for? Buy this collection, or suffer the wrath of Phoenix!!! Oh, and John Byrne rocks. SPOILER: Check out his rendition of Moira McTaggert's son Proteus locked in the decaying body of her ex-hubby. Frightening.
