Product Description

Earth's Mightiest Heroes fight one of the greatest battles in super hero history in the pages of this Marvel Masterworks spectacular! It's hero against hero in the sensational summer hit of 1973-the Avengers/Defenders War. Cap vs. Namor! Thor vs. Hulk! It's the original crossover clash and there's never been another one like it. But before our heroes take sides against each other, there's even more trend-setting classics in store for you: Mantis makes her first appearance; the Lion God brings the Avengers to their knees; Vision and the Scarlet Witch's relationship blossoms, but not without the intolerant objections of others.COLLECTING Avengers 112-119, Defenders 8-11, FOOM 6-7

Well, Avengers in their best form, and the pencils are from one of the best! I cannot write one bad word about the book and as usually you can tell the difference between a paperback and a hardcover version clearly. :). I have done a research about The Avengers comics and what I have found out that after the last Avengers Masterwork book (nr. 13) the further numbers have appeared already in different Avengers collections, so I think there will be no more Avengers Masterworks.

A hard Masterwork to review... 21 May 2012
By Jim Davis - Published on Amazon.com

...because the best has been Masterworked previously.

Masterwork aficionados had wondered for years how Marvel would handle the classic Avengers/Defenders War storyline that ran through both titles in the summer of 1973. Eventually, Marvel decided to reprint the entire saga in both the Defenders and the the Avengers masterworks lines. Last year it was reprinted in the Defenders line; this year it gets reprinted in the Avengers line. It seems like the storyline has been reprinted a half a dozen times over the last thirty odd years.

Make no mistake, it is a classic storyline. The clash between the two groups seems perfectly plausible, not gratuitous as in many other hero vs. hero battles. The scheme by Dormammu is reasonably clever with the only weakness being what exactly Loki brings to the table other than its ultimate failure.

But is the rest of the book worth getting if one has already read the Avengers/Defenders War storyline in the aforementioned Defenders masterwork (or elsewhere for that matter)?

If one is a completist there is really no choice. But if not, one is missing well below average material whose only long term influence was the introduction of Mantis and the reintroduction of the Swordsman into the Avengers. But that's only part of the story.

Marvel went out of their way to load this volume up with hard to find extras like Avengers features from the 1970s fan magazine FOOM (Friends of Ol' Marvel, I think). There are some nice covers, Dave Cockrum artwork, an "interview" with the Avengers butler Jarvis, a two page Forbush Man humor strip featuring the Vision and Scarlet Witch, and a very interesting Steve Englehart profile. In addition, we also get some original artwork, house ads, and collections covers. All in all, Marvel tried to sugar coat the bitter pill of buying the same storyline twice as well as it could.

Highly recommended if you passed on the previous Defenders masterwork. If you've read that then you have a tough decision to make.

Crossover Fever! 21 Jan. 2014

Steve Englehart wrote some of the wiggiest stories in Avengers history: the Celestial Madonna, techno/mutant romance, crossovers galore. The stories are fun and energetic, ably assisted by artists Heck, Brown, and Buscema. Good stuff.

Avengers, Defenders, Villians, you name it. 13 Jun. 2012

For anyone who read these comics in the 70s, what a great way to relive these amazing characters. And for those who did not, what a shame. But you didn't miss out, you can read them here.

The graphic computer art of today is great, but hand drawn panels by the talented artists they had back then just are more dramatic and pleasing to the eye.

With the success of the Avengers movie, time to jump on board to read the back stories that made those characters so great!
