5.0 out of 5 stars Superb end to a great series 15 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A truly excellent end to a great series of firsts.

Most (though not all) of the first appearances of various characters in various titles. I never understood the exact criteria for appearing as some of my favourites such as Linda Carter didn't appear in the 60s book and yet the Human Torch appears in the FF1 and Strange Tales 101. This volume (part 3) includes Nova, Ms Marvel, She Hulk, Black Goliath, etc - some of the comics I remember well and others are fairly obscure. The reprint quality is superb throughout. An added bonus was the inclusion of all (and I assume it was all) of the covers of the ones that didn't make it into the volume (such as reprint issues, licensing reasons, etc) Some of the titles I have never seen in any comic shop or comic convention.

Would have been even more extra special if the book had included a few more extras such as covers of titles never released (surely there must have been a few of those or titles with different titles on release etc) as well as perhaps a few historical essays as well as some biographies / comments by and about the key writers, inkers, artists, letterers etc of the period.

Would love to see a 50s as well as 80s version of the series.. probably hard to imagine that happening as I am certain the former would be tricky and the latter would be 10 volume series of increasing complexity of characters as there were so many new super heroes introduced during the 80s. Another possible would be (like the origin series years and years ago), a villain series for the 60s and 70s .. but then who would be in the book ? Paste Pot Pete, Dr Doom, Melter, Jack Frost, The Looter etc - perhaps one off villains would not be mentioned but even so, the book would still cover quite a few volumes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Late seventies time capsule. 1 Sep 2012
By Richard Bell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Marvel last in a series of trade paperbacks that give a sampling of the 1970's is an fascinating time capsule back to an era that is unknown to many today or causes a lot of folks to cringe when they review pictures of themselves. Economically, inflation was rampant and the causal observer looking at this book can understand that fact. For comic books, prices went from 20 cents to a quarter to .30 and then to .35 and then 40 cents. Many comics cover would sport the saying...."Still .30 or still .35 since many books would stay on the racks of the candy store or drug store or 7-11 for three months or longer. This book continues the practice of displaying covers from Marvel's first run of many color comics and black and white magazines that was included in the first two volumes. This practice allows the reader to see the major pop culture trends of the era. Star Wars, disco, kung fu, and female heroes were all big trends in this era. That actual comic stories feature a sampling of some of the top writers and artists of that time period. Many come off as too "dime store material" but others display a willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of comic book art. I feel that this book is an excellent addition to any Marvel collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great 21 Jan 2013

I liked this volume, though not has much as volume 1 of this series. The closer Marvel gets to the 1980's, they seem to lose their creativity.
