This Supraphon 3-CD box set (fat-box jewel case) contains superb performances of Martinu's seven string quartets recorded between 1979 and 1982 in excellently engineered analogue sound. The Panocha Quartet members, at the time of these recordings, were Jiri Panocha (1st violin), Pavel Zejfart (2nd violin), Miroslav Sehnoutka (viola), ans Jaroslav Kulhan (cello).

Martinu's quartets were composed right through his career, from the first, clearly influenced by Debussy and Ravel, in 1918 to the seventh in 1947. I think all of the quartets are of the highest quality, absolute masterpieces of the literature, and so few people seem to know them at all, which is such a pity. The quartets have been lucky on disc, and whilst I am very happy with this Supraphon set, the recordings on Naxos by the Martinu Quartet desrve a hearing, too (Martinu: String Quartets Volume 1, for example).

These are not "thorny" works, but I would suggest that the sunny fourth quartet from 1937 might be a good place to start.

Unmissable!

These recordings of Martinu's complete quartets by the Panocha Quartet have been around for quite a while: the earliest dates from 1979 (quartet no. 5) while the last of the cycle was completed near the end of 1982. While the Martinu Quartet has recorded a more recent cycle of the quartets on Naxos which have received excellent reviews, the Panocha Quartet cede nothing to their fellow Czechs. The Panocha performances are completely idiomatic, expertly played and very well recorded. And it's nice to see that classicstoday bestowed a 10/10 rating on this set, calling it "one of the finest efforts ever undertaken by the Panocha Quartet, and that's saying a lot. Their playing is gorgeous, with a smoothness and warmth of tone that keeps the busy textures of the neoclassical pieces from sounding merely dry and scratchy, and with an enlivening rhythmic bounce that floats Martinu's singing lines with effortless naturalness. Add to that a wealth of captivating tone colors (try the brief Third Quartet for a generous sample) and excellent engineering, and the result is a classic set that no serious chamber music collector can afford to miss." I agree.
