Come on, face it , you never thought this was going to be your favourite CD ever, did you? I found this disk cheap, and having bought all the Naxos Martinu quartet discs I reckoned it was worth the risk- having heard, it still do. Schizoid Mark makes a valid point about the recording level, this probably is a live recording (there is no intrusive audience noise) and comparing it with other chamber recordings it sounds maybe distant, and certainly quiet. I did listen out for the increase in recording level Mark mentions and I think I can hear what he means, but I suspect it was part of the performance and I certainly wouldn't consider it a technical fault enough to would put me off. I will certainly play the disc again- making it a very cheap concert ticket- but I doubt I'd play all four works back to back. I've never heard these pieces played by anyone else, they might have scope for a magnificent performance that is missed here, but if that ever happens I will be glad to have made the acquaintance of the music from a bargain purchase.
