Review

'The Holst Sinfonietta's [version of the title work] is full of verve (as is their playing on this disc). Naxos's sound is clearly superior [to Ruzicková's version].' --Guy Rickards, Gramophone Awards 2012 Issue

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Stuart Sillitoe on 5 Feb. 2013
Format: Audio CD
This is a disc of some of Martinů's most inspired jazz influenced music, as such I know it will not appeal to all, but this is a wonderful disc which should be given a chance by all!
The disc opens with the wonderful Concerto for Harpsichord and Small Orchestra from 1935, this is surely one of the finest twentieth century works for the instrument which, for me, is only eclipsed by Poulenc! It is a riot of colour and entertainment, music to make you smile. Robert Hill's playing is excellent, it is a more assured recording than Zuzana Ruzickova's on Supraphon even when you take the insight of the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and Václav Neumann in to account.
This is followed by two works new to me, Chamber Music No.1(Les fêtes nocturnes) from 1959, and Les rondes from 1930, both wonderfully evocative of Parisian life, with the earlier work being the most jazz inspired.
The final work on the disc is the `Ballet du Jazz' La revue de cuisine, this work is better known as his Jazz Suite, although here we have a performance of the complete ballet in an edition edited by the hero of the early music scene and Martinů scholar, Christopher Hogwood. The complete ballet is some seven minutes longer than the suite, and the extra music adds to the fun of the piece, making it preferable to the recording of the suite I have on Supraphon.
The playing of the Holst-Sinfonietta is excellent throughout and I look forward to future recordings from this Freiburg based chamber ensemble. They are directed, sometimes ably from the piano, which is no mean feat as the piano plays a significant role in some of this music, by Klaus Simon, who seems to relish this music.
This is a most welcome and highly recommended disc.
