5.0 out of 5 stars Performs very well 26 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase
I spent ages trying to find the right spice grinder. Previously had a DeLonghi coffee grinder but I didn't like the fact that you couldn't wash it out.... this was one of my key criteria. I do not use it for coffee but grind a lot of different spices.

I've had this product for a month and it has performed really well. I like the fact that you can take out the bowl and blade and shove it in the dishwasher. It has a neat insert which allows you to grind small quantities. I also find it useful if I want a really fine powder. If you leave the insert off then you generally get a rougher grind.

It pulses when you press the button which prevents you grinding too far or over-heating the device. Today I ground dried chillies which are a little tacky and it ground them to a nice even size. It works great on whole spices, even a stick of cinnamon. I haven't tried whole dried turmeric yet (which killed my last grinder) but I think if I break it up first it should work.

It has a short lead (which all of these products seem to suffer from) but if you pull down the bottom section and you can wind the cable around the base then push it up again for storing neatly.

On the whole, I've very pleased with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grinds spices and makes pastes - excellent. 10 Jan 2012
By C. Irwin TOP 500 REVIEWER
My wife bought me this spice grinder for my birthday after I dropped a few heavy hints about it.

I'm a keen cook and I specialise in Mexican and American BBQ cooking, both of which benefit greatly from freshly ground spices, especially dried chillies, cumin, coriander seeds, etc. And also make use of pastes, usually with garlic and/or onion added to herbs and spices. This spice grinder handles them all well, although you need to cut down larger pieces of garlic or onion before grinding them.

One of the first things I made was some chipotle chile powder, using jalapenos I had smoke dried myself, whole cumin seeds and a little salt. I tore the dried chile into strips and popped it into the grinder along with the cumin seeds and salt. Then, as it was a relatively small amount of material to grind, I popped on the supplied adaptor, that basically holds smaller batches close to the grinding blades, then the outside top. When the adaptor is in place you can't see what you're grinding but your ears will tell you when it's done - the initial crackling rattle as the larger bits whizz around in the grinder is replaced by a quieter whoosh sound and you know everything has been broken down.

The chipotle chile powder was excellent.

I've been experimenting with brining meats before cooking them. Usually you make the brine by heating up water and stirring like crazy to dissolve the sugar and salt and then add ice to cool it back down again. By grinding the sugar and salt to a fine powder I was able to dissolve it very quickly in cold water.

Since then I've used it to grind up spices for dry rubs, to make a turmeric, cumin, ginger and garlic paste to mix with yoghurt to make spicy marinated lamb, and also for other bits and bobs.

I've had this Grinder for 5 months and it has served me well until now. I have used it nearly everyday for coffee and spices.

The Good - Detachable grinding head, easy to clean, compact, useful spice attachment for small amounts of spices. It grinds hard spices like cinnamon and nutmeg relatively well. It grinds sea salt ok but you need to give it a bit of a shake to avoid it sticking.

The Bad - The plastic this unit is constructed with is not engineered to stand the test of time and durability. At the time of writing, the plastic shell around the grinder unit is severely cracked, as is the plastic on both lid and grinder head - there are stress cracks all over them and the grinder head has finally started falling apart due to this and now I must return it to the supplier and try another product.

In summary, this grinder is probably fine for occasional use with coffee beans and soft spices, but for more demanding use it will not last due to the under-engineered plastic. It's a shame really because in practice this unit performs well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Linseed 1 Sep 2011
By Bess
Verified Purchase
I recently purchased one of these and was really impressed with how quickly my linseed was ground up into a fine powder. I was told to increase my child's fibre intake and omega intake so linseed was a great way of grinding it down and hiding it into my allready cooked food, especially as my child is on a gluten free diet. I was so impressed with this grinder, only after a few seconds all the linseed was ground finely and the apparatus is very easily cleaned. Linseed has a slight stickiness to it as there is a little oil in each seed, when finely powdered, but it had no problem dealing with this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Two burnt out! 12 April 2012
By Mark
I brought this spice grinder as a replacement for a very old grinder that had stood the test of time exceptionally well. The first one I bought worked perfectly well for the first 4 uses and was an extremely good spice grinder meeting my requirements. On the 5th use it unfortunately burnet out! - despite being within the specified maximum time periods, and the grinder not being overly filled or holding 'hard' spices the grinder gave a little pop, a puff of smoke and stopped working.

I returned this and received a replacement and on the 2nd time of usage exactly the same story - this time after about 5 seconds of use and with the grinder not even being on at the time!!!

I appreciate that this is cheap but it might be worth shopping around, or investing an extra view quid - I wonder if James Martin even realises what he's put his name to!!!
