Synopsis
Produced by Martin Scorsese and helmed by seven major film directors (including Clint Eastwood, Wim Wenders, and Charles Burnett), this seven-part collection traces the history of the blues. Beginning by discovering the earliest recorded works of the blues from the 1920s, and ending with the influence and sound of the blues on contemporary music, this comprehensive guide is the definitive word on the genre. Some incredible footage has been unearthed, including interviews, behind the scenes material, and electrifying performances from artists including Otis Rush, Ray Charles, B.B. King, and many others. A classic collection for the connoisseur of the blues, or the perfect place to start for those who want to learn more about this uniquely American genre of music.
THE ROAD TO MEMPHIS is directed by RICHARD PEARCE and explores the life of BB KING.

4.0 out of 5 stars BB goes home, 30 Sep 2008

This has got to be one of the best in the Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues series, dealing with a reunion gig in Memphis involving BB King among other musicians. There is interview and performance footage of King, who is an engaging and passionate interviewee as well as a compelling performer. His facial contortions while playing are worth watching in themselves, if occasionally alarming. Another musician who gets a lot of time is Bobby Rush, a contemporary of King but still playing the southern circuit. His flamboyance marks him out as more of an entertainer in the James Brown mode than a bluesman but again he's an interesting speaker, and a good songwriter going by the snippets included in the movie.

Ike Turner also makes an appearance, in conversation with an extremely irascible Sam Phillips, which is another good moment. Rosco Gordon is there too, not long before his death.
In all, this is an entertaining and occasionally moving look into the lives of these musicians. They speak with a compelling directness and honesty.
Of the movies in the Scorsese Blues series that I've seen, this ranks with Feel Like Going Home as the best, with Soul of a Man in the middle, and Red, White and Blue and Godfathers and Sons being two to avoid. Piano Blues and Warming by the Devil's Fire are the two I haven't seen.
