5.0 out of 5 stars Nadesico-The ship of fools. 9 Mar 2003
Format:DVD
Martian Successor Nadesico is a series that is firmly rooted in action and comedy. The series is always funny and the english dub of the script succeeds in adding more energy to the proceedings. Spike spencer is just superb as Akido Tenkawa, The fry-cook turned giant robot pilot.

The series is set in the year 2196AD, one year after the earth colony of mars was attacked the the Jovian Lizards a warlike race believed to be from beyond Jupiter. The Earths United Forces (UF) have been defeated at every turn and now earth is about to fall.In response to the UF's ineffectualness a civilian combany, Nergal Heavy Industries has built their own space battleship, the high mobile battleship Nadesico. This ship is the most powerful ever built. However its crew leaves a lot to be desired. On its bridge alone it has an Anime voice actress turned communications officer, a secetary turned pilot, a madcap novice captain and a cynical preteen computer genius as an operations officer. The rest of the crew are simmilar misfits.

The series begins with the nadesico lifting off and heading for Mars. The UF are not happy with this and decide to seise the ship but are driven off. The series is not without sadness however as someone dies, I won't say who.

Unlike most anime where the dubbing is sub-par ,Nadesicos english vocal cast are almost perfect for the role. I have watched the series in both Japanese and English and I prefer the English dub. The english cast are able to add a lot of energy to there portrayals which makes the series such a joy to watch, particulary during the first episode.

I would reccomend nadesico to any fan of action of comedy, fans of deep meaning look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great series and a MUST buy 15 Jan 2003
By J. Lee
Format:DVD
Nadesico is a great series that follows the exploits of the crew of a ship called 'Nadesico.' The show features a wide range of likeable characters and the series seems to be primarily comedy with the odd serious and dramatic moment.
The series' storyline isn't very strong though. It lacks a middle and an end, it just seems to go on with strange stories that have little use for continuity. It is still very fun and well animated however and I am very pleased with my purchase. (I bought the american box set) I noted that the series SHOULD be watched in japanese. ADV films have a tendency to use the same voice actors over and over and this anime is no exception. (The main character Tenkawa Akito is voiced by Spike Spencer - popular as evangelion's Ikari Shinji)
Buy this series and you wont be disappointed, and if it follows the American style of release, you will only have to buy 6 DVDs to collect the entire 26 episodes. (Don't hold your breath over the european release of the movie though)

Format:VHS Tape
I recently bought the the first two volumes of the series. After watching the the first episode I could not wait to purchase the whole series. The show has mixture of romance, commedy and action. The main thing that made me buy this tape was the interaction between the main charaters i.e Akito-the pilot/cook, Yurika- the air-head capt, Jun-the assistant capt and Megumi-the communication officer. In this volume the military is interested in Akito, because he has the abillity to teleport with the use of the blue crystal round his neck. Megumi reveals who the Jovian lizards are(up to now the the crew have been fighting yellow robots). This tape is a must buy because its none stop laughs from start to end. The main laughs come from the fact that Akito is being chased by half a dozen girls but all he wants to do is watch Gekigangar 3. This is a must if you are a fan of manga.
