I have loved Soke Kevin Pell and his Ishin Ryu Jujitsu system, so as you can guess when I found out he had a publication of his style of jujitsu and was jumping up and down with bugged out eyes. Well when I got the book, my eyes bugged out again, but not from excitment but saying wtf is this S***? It's Soke Kevin Pell in cartoon form?????????????? But amazingly enough.....the book is good. The art is mediocre, honestly, but the bodies are draw well enough that the defensive techniques are clear to see with an easy step by step to see the applications for blocks, locks, strikes, disarming, and a small section on ground fighting. This is a great book for kids that would have an interest in Jujitsu that doesn't come from Brazil.....even though Soke Kevin Pell is from England.....yeah. But it does have practical applications for children in the book as well. And by practical I mean techniques that are not going to totally maim someone. You may need to sit and read the book with your children to start, but......don't expect them to say," DAD, the is the greatest eff'n book ever."(Of course if my child said that I would say watch your eff'n mouth and continue with the effective and not so maiming joint locks in this book.) Jujitsu is a beautiful art that has everything you could ever want in an art. This book doesn't have an activities section but the kids and Soke Kevin Pell look so damn happy all the time that this is an ideal kids book up there right between "Curious George" and "where the wild things are." Honestly, look past the cartoons, Great applications. As for me, I'm still trying to connect the dots on the top of Cartoon Soke Kevin Pell's head to reverse his receding hair line.
