The sensational No.1 New York Times bestseller

Swirled and sprinkled, dipped and glazed, or otherwise fancifully decorated, cupcakes are the treats that make everyone smile. They are the star attraction for special days, such as birthdays and holidays, as well as perfect everyday goodies. Now in Martha Stewart's Cupcakes, you can enjoy 175 ideas for simple to spectacular creations - with cakes, frostings, fillings, toppings, and embellishments that can be combined to produce just the right cupcake for any occasion.

Alongside traditional favourites like yellow buttermilk cupcakes swirled with fluffy vanilla frosting and devil's food cupcakes crowned with rich, dark chocolate buttercream, there are also sweet surprises such as peanut butter and jam cupcakes, dainty delights like chai-tea mini cupcakes, and showstoppers topped with marzipan ladybirds or clowns.

The book features cupcakes for everyone, every season, and every event: CELEBRATIONS (fondant monogram heart cupcakes for an elegant wedding); BIRTHDAYS (starfish-on-the-beach cupcakes sure to be a hit at children's parties); HOLIDAYS (gumdrop ghouls and goblins ideal for Halloween revellers); and ANY DAY (red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for a potluck dinner or applesauce-spice cupcakes for an after-school snack).

In singular Martha Stewart style, the pages are both stunning in design - with a photograph of each finished treat - and brimming with helpful how-to information, from step-by-step photographs for decorating techniques to ideas for packaging and presenting your cupcakes. 5.0 out of 5 stars One down, 174 more to go! 10 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback
Having developed something of a cupcake making obsession, I've been searching for a really good cupcake book for ages and this is it. Loads of yummy recipies to chose from with a good mix of fancy, basic and novelty things to try. I can hardly wait till Easter next year to make the coconut covered chicks.

I made the chocolate cookie cheescake cupcakes last night and they turned out really well. Anything that involves a whole Oreo cookie at the bottom is a winner with me!

If you have a look on Martha Stewarts website, you can see lots of the recipies used in the book, which will give you a good idea if its the kind of thing you're going to like. All the recipies in the book use American measurements, but Nigella Lawsons website has a very handy conversion chart that you can use to work out what the UK equivalent is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic cakes but written for US market 14 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I had tried some of the recipes that are in this book which are already published on the author's website and really like them so decided to get the book. Some of the recipes had also been published in UK newspapers where the weights and measures were converted to UK measures (grams and ounces etc).

There are a huge variety of recipes in the book, some of which use standard cake mixes or frosting recipes and combine in different ways or show a variety of interesting ways to decorate them. I really like that the recipes are for "authentic" American style cupcakes as that is what I was looking for.

I would definitely recommend this book, but only to more experienced bakers, it is not really aimed at beginners as some of the methods are complicated and not thoroughly explained. However, if you've happily baked a few batches of cakes and are ready for some more interesting recipes then this is a great book.

A few things to note:
1. The size of cupcakes in this book uses what we in the UK call a "muffin tin" and you will need larger cupcake cases or muffin cases, these are becoming more widely available in the UK.
2. The weights and measures are all US i.e. cups, sticks (we can't get butter in sticks) etc You'll either need a set of measuring cups (I find them hard to use) or search online for a good converter - but remember, as US measures are by volume it depends what you are measuring as to how much it will weigh.
3. The oven temperatures are also in Fahrenheit so for my oven I need to convert those too.
4. You will need an electric stand mixer to effectively produce these cakes, I have tried by hand and also with an electric hand mixer and you just don't get the same results.

Overall this does make all of the cakes a bit time consuming to produce, but so far the results have been worthwhile. I've been baking for weddings and the compliments have been many, no complaints so far ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugely inspiring! 19 July 2011
By Scheherazade VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is probably my favourite cupcake cookbook when I'm lacking inspiration! At over 300 pages, it's definetly the most exhaustive cupcake book I own, containing a huge selection of pretty unique recipes. Although this book is written using American cup measures, with oven temparatures in farenheit, there is a useful conversion chart on the copyright page which means you'll never be too stuck with any of the recipes (even if you don't have a cup measurer, which are easy enough to find in the UK now). I will say, though, that some of the ideas in this book are just so fussy and complex that I wouldn't bother -- but I've always managed to find some morsel of inspiration, even when I don't feel like standing in the kitchen for hours. Another thing to point out is that some of the quantities are ridiculous -- many of the recipes in this book produce 36 cupcakes, which I find is far too many -- and not all of my efforts to scale down have worked all that well.

Despite these complaints, though, this book still remains one of my most browsed. The photography is simply beautiful, and accompanies every recipe, and there's a wonderfully useful section at the end on ingredients, presentation, frostings, etc. If you're looking for a cupcake cookbook that goes beyond the meagre offerings of most, this is the book you want!
