I'm writing this review just to balance off the previous one. This boxset contains some excellent recordings, thereby my annoyance as being rated so low by the other reviewer. The contents of the boxset would ideally be available on Amazon but it doesn't take a great effort to find them online: Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3, both Chopin concertos, Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Mikhail Pletnev's Fantasia elvetica, Falla's Noches en los jardines de España etc.

Two reviewers have demonstrated a misunderstanding of the meaning of the star ratings, which is to advise potential buyers of your experience and assessment of the product you have bought. I and another person added comments to the first negative review to point out that enlarging the photo of the back of the CD case top left does allow you to see fairly precisely what is on offer in terms of pieces, players, conductor and orchestra. If people have criticisms of Amazon's listing, they should direct them to Amazon. In my experience Amazon do not take any notice at all of criticisms about listings made in reviews, since these are directed at potential purchasers and not Amazon.
In fact since I started writing this review 30 minutes ago, Amazon appear to have added samples of all the CD tracks - sometimes clicking on the mp3 version for sale does give more information than provided on the CD page incidentally. So - perhaps Amazon do take notice of reviews!

excellent pianism 4 April 2012
By opera lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The musicianship of one of the supreme titans of the keyboard is everywhere much in evidence here.
She infuses, like only an artistic genius can, fidelity to the composer,
as well as her own learned insights.
An Argerich always goes to the top of the list. I just wish she would have recorded mors, specifically more of the Beethoven piano concertos and at least the greatest of the Beethoven Sonatas.
I fear that because of certain key omissions, her legacy will not be as great as it deserves to be.

The most exciting pianist I have ever witnessed in my 74 years. I have seen the best including Rubenstein, and Horowitz. She brought chills to me throughout the performance.

FIERY BUT CONTROLLED, WITH SUPERB TECHNIQUE AND GIANT HEART --A MUSICAL TREASURE (4-1/2*) 17 Jun 2014
By David Keymer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
CD 1: Chopin: Piano Concertos 1, 3. MA, p; Charles Dutoit, Orch. Symph. De Montreal
CD 2: Prokofiev: Piano Concerto 1. Bartok: Piano Concerto 3. Prokofiev: Piano Concerto 3: MA, Dutoit.
CD 3: Beethoven: Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano: MA, p; Renaud Capucon, viol; Mischa Maisky, cello; Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky, cond; Orch. della Svizzera Italiana. Schumann: Piano Concerto in A Minor: MA, Rabinovitch-Barakovsky; Orch. della Svizz.
CD 4: Shostakovich: Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings: MA, p; Sergei Nakariakov, tpt; Alexander Vedernikov, Orch. della Svizz. De Falla: Noches en los Jardines de Espana: MA, p; Vedernikov, Orch. della Svizz. Pletnev: Fantasia Elvetica: MA, Alexander Mogilewsky; Mikhail Pletnev, Orch. della Svizz.

The recordings in this four pack were made from 1997 to 2009. They're not all uniformly compelling but Martha Argerich is brilliant on every one of them, which isn't a surprise. Argerich has long been one of the most compelling of pianists, combining deep wells of feeling with phenomenal technique. The heart of her muscular brand of lyricism seems to be physical: she has learned how to ease the tension on her fingers so that when they strike the keyboard, no matter how fast the tempo (Argerich is known as a `fast' pianist), the notes ring just as much as is needed and no more. There are no fuzzy after-tones. That's important because so much of what she plays is hyper-Romantic -Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann, etc.- and it's meant to be played big. "Big" Argerich does exceptionally well, but "messy" she does never.

I'm disappointed in the fourth disc in this collection (Shostakovich, De Falla, Pletnev) -not in the quality of the playing but the music selected. I love the Shostakovich concerto, which is written for piano and trumpet. (The trumpet solos only in the first and last movements.) I could do without the other two pieces: de Falla's Noches is pleasant enough but essentially impressionism Light with a Spanish twist, and Pletnev's Fantasia Elvetica, composed for two pianos and orchestra, just isn't my cup of tea: it is too derivative to be interesting for long.

The other three discs offer a wealth of treasures and a good balance of musical approaches: a disc of Chopin (two concertos), another of Prokofiev (two concertos) and Bartok (his glorious third piano concerto -what a joy it is to hear Argerich playing Bartok again), a third of Beethoven and Schumann. On the Beethoven triple concerto, she plays with her good friend cellist Mischa Maisky and a young violinist (27 at the time) Renaud Capucon, and what glorious music they make together. It is difficult to pick favorites among these first three discs. Every piece played is good and the playing, no surprise, is impassioned AND impeccable, a combination that is not always present when passion takes over pianists' hands.

Argerich was 56 when she recorded the earliest of these (the two concertos by Prokofiev, Bartok's third piano concerto) and 68 when she recorded the last (De Falla). She's 73 now. When I saw Rubenstein in Paris in 1969 (he was playing the Chopin solo piano cycle), he was 77 and still going strong with no diminution of technique or imagination. Let's hope for many more fruitful years of performance from this grand, inspiring, gracious performer, one of the treasures of our age.

(I have deducted a half Star for the fourth CD.)

While this is a great collection of Martha Argerich, the recording (sound quality) is not the best. The dynamic range of the orchestra was not there.
