Book Description

In this collection of stories by naturalist and animal lover Gerald Durrell, we are introduced to an eccentric cast of characters, including a perfume-wearing truffle pig and his jealous owner; an ageing set of alcoholic southern belles; a young, handsome sea captain who meets a tragic fate; a whisky-drinking hangman in Paraguay who is haunted by his victims, and a foul-mouthed talking parrot. Told with Durrell’s characteristic charm and wit, these stories – some of which may or may not be autobiographical – are humorous, touching, and always highly entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gerald Durrell does it again! 11 July 2012
By Mavvis
Format:Kindle Edition
Gerald Durrell tells these short stories with enough wit and charm to entice you to buy all his books. They are like reading a witty feature in a newspaper that makes you smile and want to share with your friends. The stories take you across the world and we meet quirky characters from an American ageing belle to the FUNNY pig who loves truffles (the pig story is my favourite!!) However, it must be noted that not everyone gets Gerald Durrell's sense of humour so before you go off and download all his books at once I would read either "My Family and Other Animals," or "Menagerie Manor," (as introduction books). If you love his quirky humour in those books you should "get" the rest of his work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal wee bits for a holiday 2 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read Gerald Durrell many years ago in my 20s and loved them. I even visited Jersey zoo when on holiday in Brittany.

When I saw these going at a reasonable price I had to have them.

He has such a way with words that the pictures form in your mind as you read. The way he describes people, their dress and their mannerisms shows that he is more in the habit of animal watching.

This is a spate of short stories that wouldn't fit into his other books: some are hilarious, some are poignant and all are worth reading. Ideal for dipping into on holiday.

This book made me laugh out loud and wipe away a tear. I learnt so much from it with it's insights into both human and animal behaviour and the links therein. Would definitely read more of Durrell's books and recommend this to everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durrell Trilogy 26 Sept. 2013
By Ian
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For anyone who loves Greece in general and admires Gerry Durrell's contribution to conservation or rare species in particular, this set of books sets the scene for all his other work.
I have read & re-read these books several times and still get enormous pleasure from doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 11 Oct. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Gerald Durell at his best, thoroughly readable, very funny, sometimes moving, and completely fabricated from beginning to end. Bizarre characters with bizarre names in totally bizarre stories. I loved it!

Anecdotes of an incredibly interesting life, humorously and beautifully written. Wonderful observations and descriptive writing - a good read in bite size pieces.
