There seems to have been no point in setting this story in the 1800s other than to enable the author to write : "the bulge in his tight breeches" on page eleven.
The anachronisms of language, attitudes and behaviour are astonishing, the characters thin.
Quickly, instead of reading this, try Persuasion by Jane Austen, written in the 1800s. Or perhaps a modern novel written about a slightly later period - Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. And for no effort whatsoever - Cranford on BBC1 - tight breeches and bonnets ahoy!
