'A moving portrait of a woman between cultures and also the holy grail of women's writing: an entertaining work of chick-lit that is meaningful and important' Evening Standard 'Frank and witty' Irish Times 'What's new here - and stunningly so - is Jain's engaging, intelligent voice, at turns wry and provocatively curious' New York Times

Product Description

You are a single woman in your thirties, fed up with the singles scene. You are tired of singles dinner parties, and exhausted by phone calls, e-profiles, and forced dinner conversation. You fear you will never marry. What do you do? Anita Jain, a New York-based Indian-American journalist, is just such a woman. Even her parents despair of her and have logged her details on to an Indian dating internet site. For years she has trusted the Western way of finding a husband, but maybe there's something in arranged marriages after all. It certainly can't get any worse. So she's travelling to India in search of a perfect husband. Marrying Anita is a refreshingly honest look at the modern search for a mate set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernising New India. Will she find a suitable man? If so, will he please her nosy parents, aunts, uncles and cousins? Is the new urban Indian culture all that different from New York? And is any of this dating worth the effort?

Absolutely Dire 5 Aug 2009
By Gundog
Format:Paperback
I started this reading this book uder the impression that it would be a REALISTIC view of a slightly 'older' woman searching for true love. Instead, it reads as a catalogue of a bed-hopping tramp's conquests as she moves from the US to India. If she were a decade younger her exploits could be forgiven as naivity, but as a woman approaching 35 her methods of 'snagging' a husband are simply ridiculous. I am also astonished that a Harvard graduate could write such drivel; and that it's an autobiographical account is even more incredible.

Do not read this book unless you are prepared to yell yourself hoarse at the pages. Dreadful.

Totally agree with Gundog's review!! I bought this book being in my 30s and unmarried and facing the dilemma of modern methods vs traditional and in the process getting older and older. What I hoped would be something I could empathise with and feel reassured by actually left me riding my moral high horse!! Bed-hopping, hanging out with the wrong crowd and acting like she is a teenager is why she is not married NOT because of any kinda of socially unusual status! Not sure who I would recommend this book to really. Maybe it should be renamed "how not to do it"!!!
